Lion Show Desktop Mission Control Gesture

I cant stand the way we use show desktop any more its so hard. I mean using a thumb and three fingers, thats so more complicated than the four finger swipe up gesture which was perfect for it. I have tried it tons of time and after 5 min of trying i seem to be able to use the gesture then again 5 min later i have to waste 5 more min just to get it right again. Is there a way I could tweak lion settings for it to allow it, there has to be a way.

I agree, the new gestures are buggy at best. Especially show desktop! When I use it, I seem to trigger a different action every time. It's very frustrating. I would love to be able to change the guestures to whatever I want. Four fingers up worked great for me in Snow Leopard too, but that's not even an option any more to to show desktop in Lion. Apple has really limited our ability to customize these features!

Thank you, arthelinus!

Google sent me here when I asked how can I just show desktop on lion. You gave me the answer i was looking for. Thanks!

But honestly, I don't understand the source of your frustration. I absolutely love the new gesture, it actually makes sense (to me anyway). But I don't get the success rates posted here. I've done it about 10 times so far, and never missed. Or maybe I just have exactly the kind of fingers Apple was aiming at )))

I dont have problems with the new gestures but the fact that i dont get to choose what gestures does what, I am using bettertouchtools to use do this now. Whenever i tried the show desktop i kept on triggering launchpad, so i had to disable it to get my success rate to 50%. Its not the what it used to be but atleast i can trigger it half the time.

I agree that Apple should provide a way to choose the gestures but I don't understand the difficult people are talking about regarding the new ones.

To show the desktop you don't have to click or anything, just spread four fingers from the inside out. And to show the Launchpad get fingers together from outside in. That simple.

It works 100% of the time using an Magic Trackpad. Perhaps it can be a little bit trickier with a Magic Mouse.

Again it seems like it's not a that a lot of us don't get how to do the gesture, it's that for me when I do that gesture my thumb nail hits the pad before I get very far in the movement and it doesn't register. We understand that with "gestures" of course you don't click anything you do the simple movement on the trackpad or magic mouse. (I have a trackpad.) My hand doesn't work with the gesture well. If I go super slow and move very little I can get pretty consistent results with a little discomfort at contorting my hand to make it work. I would love to be able to choose something else that my hand can do easily.

I discovered a more comfortable way to show the desktop. With very consistent results -- I should add. Put your index, middle and ring finger in the center of the top half of the trackpad. Put your thumb on its side to the side under your other fingers. Move your thumb straight towards the side of the trackpad while moving your other three fingers up. This seems to work for me and my thumb nail length does not affect the results. Just my two cents.

Like the rest of you, I preferred the Snow Leopart four finger swipe up/down for showing the desktop and exposé. The new thumb and three finger is iffy at best, sometimes it reveals the desktop, other times it shows me my open windows, and I've been using Lion for over a month now on my 2011 Macbook Pro.

My best suggestion is to use thumb and all four fingers for the gesture and it should work flawlessly. I've taken to using my little finger as well and I find that the 'hit rate' is almost 100% this way as opposed to thumb and three fingers. Hope this helps.

Oh, and Apple, give us the **** option to have the old gestures back.
