volume control icon disabled
My Volume control icon was disabled automatically and the sound on my machine got locked out. I cannot increase or decrease the volume on my computer. Does any one have the same issue?
MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7)

Thanks a lot man it really solves my issue.
i had the same problem with my lion. the solution was simpler than this. I inserted the iphone headphones and the sound control reappeared and unpluging it works fine with the keyboard controls ....
crazy bug somewhere
thanks. this solution works for me too.
Thanks. The headphone`s solution also worked out for me.
Thanks, the headphone solution worked for me too. PRAM didn't work but headphones did. I never would have thought of that. Weird bug because it stuck even through a reboot.
Apple - I'm having the same issue. This is not an issue appearing on a few systems. This is all over the web. Please help with a software update!
Brand new MBP 13" with Lion upgrade. Glad I found the headphone solution.
Brand new MBP 13" / Lion. Headphone plug/unplug did the trick. Wonky, annoying bug. Please fix Apple.
I was able to solve the problem where the OS X volume controls for the internal or headphones output volume were disabled (OS X menu bar and in sound system preferences). I resolved this issue on my Early 2011 15" MacBook Pro OS X Lion 10.7.4
I first attempted to solve this by clearing the PRAM. Unfortunately, that didn't fix it.
After some tinkering, I noticed if I enabled my Bluetooth, the volume control would temporarily be on then would disable again. I wondered if it was somehow defaulting to a Bluetooth audio device that was not connected. I went and removed all bluetooth audio devices in 'Open Bluetooth Preferences' and rebooted. Upon restarting my volume controls are working properly again.
I also verified if I connected to Bluetooth audio devices (Bose wireless Bluetooth system and Sony Bluetooth speaker system) everything worked properly.
I hope this post will be of some benefit to someone experiencing the same issue. Best of luck!
The inserting headphones solution worked for me too.. bug verified to still occur at 2015-02-11
2015-07-09 Just happened to me (again) on my 3 year old 17" MBP -- tried all 3 potential fixes above (NVRAM, headphones, Bluetooth), none are working for me.
This happened before to me and I was about to bring it in to Apple when it fixed itself.
This solution helped me - I think it might have been something to do with the audio defaulting to HDMI, as I have an HDMI monitor plugged in - but taking my headphones out of the jack and putting them back in re-enabled the audio and accompanying controls.
Same thing just happened to me on my MBA so the bug still seems to be there in the latest Yosemite release. Filed a rdar even though it'll probably be a duplicate, you never know if it'll cause someone to be a bit more inclined to do a bit of work on it someday đ
That helped me somewhat.
I always use bluetooth headphones, and one day I noticed that the sound icon of my macbook was inactive. I tried the PRAM reset but it didn't help, I also knew it wasn't a hardware problem because the boot sound played.
What did the trick for me is a combination of solutions written here, I disabled bluetooth, then plugging in earplugs - pulled them back out, and the sound icon remained active. To my surprise, sound suddenly worked again.
