HP scanjet 7400c driver for OSX Lion?

My scanner will not work with Lion. I expect that HP will not provide a new driver. Will Apple do so? Should I just wait for new driver to be published by either HP or Apple? Or should I just buy a new scanner? Suggestions?

Same problem with my scanjet 3570c. Worked perfectly using the original HP installation CD under OS X 10.6 but I found no way so far to install under 10.7 lion.

HP offers drivers and software for lion on their support pages:

but this is only for a limited number of scanners.

Would also be happy to learn about any solution, work-around, freeware or whatever....

Same problem - HP 7400c software from HP web site that ran under Snow Leopard no longer runs under Lion, presumably because of lack of Rosetta.

Have also tried running the Windows XP version of the 7400c driver under VMWARE Fusion, and while the scanner and PrecisionPro software can be made to work, the scans are strangely lacking in sharpness, as if viewed through a ground-glass screen, and are therefore not useable.

Planning to try running a Snow Leopard virtual machine under VMWARE Fusion on Lion, to see if the HP's 7400c drivers for the MAC work better in this environment.

Like many other users I want to continue running a perfectly good HP 7400c - this scanner has a larger scanner window than most other more-modern scanners, and wiil therefore scan documents larger than A4.

I think I have found a solution to our driver problem with the HP Scanjet 7400c (and other widowed scanners) in OSX Lion. There is a third-party driver that works with this scanner (and many others) in Lion, VueScan 9.0.53, available at http://www.hamrick.com/vsm.html. You can download a trial version, which I did and discovered that it seems to cover all functions, including the scanning of film or slides with the overhead lamp. The trial version shows watermarks on the scan. To scan without them, one needs to purchase the driver for $39.95.

Thanks Gary437 for your suggestion.

I've now downloaded trial version of VueScan and after testing this have download the licensed version.

Both appear to work fine with my HP ScanJet 7400C under Lion. Trial version scanned images are watermarked.

This product appears to be well-supported, and works with a large range of different scanners.

should I just buy a new scanner

because my scanner 3570c is not listed.

In the HP Scanjet Scanners - HP Scanjetproducts supported in OS X 10.7 (Lion)

If your product is not listed here, youmight consider an upgrade to a newer HP scanner that will work with the newMacintosh operating system. For more information, go to the HP Shopping website(http://www.shopping.hp.com).

Upgrade the HP Scanjet to OS X 10.7 (Lion)

NOTE:

Please DO NOT install software on your Mac from any HP CD that might have come with your HP Scanjet device. This software is not intended for use on Lion.

I had the same issue.

(The HP installer, and perhaps other software components for the scanjet 7400c, are written for the PowerPC and only ran previously, I believe, because earlier versions of OS X ran the Rosetta emulator.)

The VueScan interface is excellent (better than HP's in my opinion) and seems to work flawlessly. I'd recommend that solution for $39.95.

Hurray! This not only allows me to use my scanner with Lion, it solves a long-standing problem that has forced me to keep an old HP 7400 scanner + a canon printer/scanner (apple supported printer, but not scanner) on my desk. It works with both. Now I can stow the HP and clutter my desk with other stuff. Thanks for pointing in the right direction.

I had missed this thread in my earlier research and was about to trash my two HP 7400c scanners. I am leaping all the way from OS 10.4 to 10.8 and HP offered nothing for the 7400c.

Today, someone posted about VueScan on the HP forum. I downloaded and tried it and immediately bought it. What a dynamite solution! It actually works better than the original software for the 7400c.

Thank you so much for this post Gary and for the recommendation of the VueScan driver installer.

I myself have an HP ScanJet 7400c scanner I bought years ago which scans well for my PowerPC Mac back then and was at my wits end wondering what to do since I recently bought a new iMac running Mavericks and from what I gathered the driver from HP is outdated (PowerPC) and will not be compatible with Intel Macs.

Just downloaded the VueScan driver and haven't tried scanning yet but I'm betting it works since it says it's compatible with Mavericks. Cheers.

I'm replying to this so a recent reply in search would come up in case anyone else has similar issue and is looking for a solution.
