MPEG-2 Quicktime Component in Mac OS X Lion

Hi all,

Hoping someone has a clever idea that will help my problem. I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion last week. For the past few years I've been using mpeg streamclip to convert some video files to an mpeg 2 quicktime (in conjunction with perian and the purchased mpeg 2 component). Now I can't get my video files to play back in Quicktime 7. They'll open and play audio only, but I have a black screen (ie the mpeg 2 component isn't working).

I used the bob's-yer-uncle steps above and copied the component file into the library/quicktime folder (now I have the AppleMPEG2Codec.component file and the QuickTimeMPEG2.component file in that folder, in addition to a bunch of others).......still no video playback in QT7. The interesting thing is that Quicktime X will play back just fine, but I need QT7's abilities.

Any ideas?? I've copied, reinstalled, rebooted, etc numerous times......as well as uninstalled, upgraded and reinstalled Perian too. The component files are also in the HDD/system/library/quicktime folder for redundancy.....it just ain't working.

This is why you cannot install the QT MPEG-2 Component in Lion:

"The QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component cannot be installed in OS X Lion because it is no longer required."

The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion.

In this case, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.

It didn't work on my side, I've paid for this and thought it will work but made me crazy after installing it!

So why apple doing these things? when you guys released Lion you should update your software too, to be compatible with it!

I did everything you guys explained here but didn't work!

Perian plugin rules!! Answers all problems with MPEG, MPG formatted media. Works with Lion, too.

I have the same problem, and I don't understand the last step of your solution. Where should I copy the component file ?

1. Open Finder

2. From the menu, select Go -> Computer

3. Open your hard drive (by default named Macintosh HD, I think)

4. There you should see a folder named Library, open it.

5. Inside (among many other folders) should be a folder named Quicktime. This is the folder you need to copy the component file into...

Thanks a lot TAA_Finland, it worked fine for me. After manually installing MPEG-2 component, MPEG Streamclip was able to open mpg and vob videos (as I used to do in Snow Leopard, also with the component installed).

And, at the end (as usual) I read the info in squared 5 and saw latest version with Lion support, which, in fact, I guess it is not neccessary to install (for me) now.

That's wrong if you want to open VOB files. QuickTime (X or 7) can't open VOB files, even on Lion, even with Perian. The QuickTimeMPEG2 component is required. Apple should reconsider this, in my opinion.

MPEG Streamclip is working now, thanks, good solution.

Apple's AppleMPEG2Codec.component (sometimes just called MPEG2Codec.component) and QuickTimeMPEG2.component are two different things — in both Lion and Mountain Lion, the first one enables you to encode or transcode video into MPEG2 files, while the second allows you to play back MPEG2 video files.

The component you need to run MPEGStreamclip is the QuickTimeMPEG2.component, and TAA_Finland's post above explains just how to install it (though s/he forgot to mention that you'll probably have to validate with your password before OS X will allow the file to copy to the /Library/Quicktime/ folder). Another way to install the component is to use the 'Utility MPEG2Component Lion' or 'Utility MPEG2Component M. Lion' that MPEG2 Streamclip's developer has included with the respective Lion and Mountain Lion versions of that app, but those utilities require you to use the disk image (.dmg) version of the component instead of the package (.pkg). So if you're having a hard time finding the 'QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg' but have found something similarly named but in the .pkg file format, you can just use TAA_Finland's instructions to find the actual QuickTimeMPEG2.component file inside the .pkg file and install it into your root Library/QuickTime folder (which is the Library folder located at the root of your hard drive rather than the one located inside your User folder). 😎

I am still missing a critical step. From item one below where do I get the QuickTimeMPEG2.pkg file? It cannot find on snow leopard disk or MPEG streamclip install file.

Here's how I got this to work (at least as far as MPEG Streamclip is concerned...)

Even if the installer wont work in Lion, the component inside works fine, the only problem is to how to get it out of the installer:

1. In Finder, right-click on the installer package QuickTimeMPEG2.pkg and select "Show package contents"...................
