I am still missing a critical step.  From item one below where do I get the QuickTimeMPEG2.pkg file?

Did you purchase it from Apple?  (Not sure if it's still being sold)

It's still available at the Apple Store:

In order for the whole thing to work, you have to first have the Component from the Apple Store and then follow the instructions at the MPEG Streamclip site. I did that and it worked flawlessly. Getting the component elsewhere is not advised.

Thank you TAA_Finland, It took me 3 hours (not a computer person (yet), but Its finally working.  thanks for your step by step instructions.

I need help with this too.  I have downloaded the beta version of Mpeg streamclip through their website and I found the mpeg2 component.  However, it's not the .dmg installer file.  How do I find this?

Anyone who purchased the MPEG2 Playback Component from Apple and can't install it on Lion, Mountian Lion, or Mavericks, can use "Unpkg 4.5" to install the component in your System/Library/Quicktime folder.

Unpkg 4.5 is available here, and it's my new best friend!

Thanks for the info the unpkg program worked perfectly and although the MPEG-2 plugin does work it doesnt work that well in streamclip, but is bearable (the edges of the video freeze and the video window doesnt quite fit) im assuming these are problems caused by mavericks as there was no trouble with it on mountain lion etc. The end result is unaffected so i can live with it. Thanks again i was really stuck on how to get it working!

I had bought this component some years ago, but I don't like it. I use it to open VOB files in QuickTime Player 7. I can open my VOB files in QT7, right, but they never have audio and are often truncated (many times I only have a few seconds of the beginning of the movie). QT7 is also confused with these shortened movies, because if I press option-right arrow to go to the end of the movie, QT7 shows the coloured wheel cursor for around 5 seconds and finally shows the end of the movie (the movie duration is unaffected, so I can now see the same length, but starting from the end; if I backward up to the start, QT7 again shows the few seconds from the beginning).

    Has anyone the same problem?

May I download another component to make QT7 open VOB files correctly?

Seeing as it is a quicktime component a third party application should fix your problem. Probably not ideal for you but it's an option. Maybe try the dvd player application it may open .vob files but thats just a wild guess.

Yes, you're right, DVD Player can read VOB files, as long as they are still toghether in a VIDEO_TS folder (that is, a valid DVD). VLC can also open VOB files, even separately, but (1) I edit my movies, like cropping them or exporting the audio (which VLC can't do), (2) I often want to open a folder full of VOB files, e.g. to compare them or to rename them in my workflow (VLC can only display one at once) and (3) VLC is a garbage software, really (it's playlist-based, so it loads the movie files from previous sessions (I often open a single file per row, play it, and VLC loads another when it has finished; clearing the playlist for every single file I open is unreasonable)), it also never shows correctly the duration of the playing movie, clicking on the “time” bar is never accurate, no keyboard shortcut to navigate (e.g. frame by frame) and many keyboard shortcuts are just missing or weird. (4) I use QT7 for everything else (movies related).

Thanks for your answer; unfortunately, only QT (pro) suits my needs for editing purposes (and I'm not talking about commercial movies, just files I've recorded myself which ends up in VOB (a DVD burner)).
