I think you need to move the Address Book app to the Applications folder.

It was a bit trickier than that: I had to delete the current icon in the Dock and then move the Address Book app OUT of the Applications Folder and then it opened. Then I put it back and all is well.

I have since discovered all sorts of "gray" .apps (like PhotoBooth.app) that won't open through the Applications folder. But it will open from the icon in the dock. Hmmmm. Is this a Library thing?

Thank you, Carolyn, for getting my Address Book "back" !

This was my experience on Lion (after a week of no problems with Address Book on Lion):

1) Suddenly Address Book wasn't launching from Spotlight searches, and couldn't start it up at all

2) Rebooted: no help

3) Confirmed Address Book wouldn't start from Finder /Applications, Spotlight, or Launchpad.

4) Dragged Address Book from Applications to the Dock (I didn't have it in my dock)

5) It launches from Dock, and is now magically launching just fine everywhere else

6) Remove Address Book from dock, and all is still well.

Yep, I had the same problem as sfraize - exactly. Address Book showed in the Dock as being active, but didn't display, and wasn't showing in the Force Quit window either.

Here's what I did:

1. removed Address Book from the Dock;

2. tried to launch it from the Applications folder (but it crashed the Finder and I had to shut down by holding the Start key);

3. on reboot, launched Address Book again from the Applications folder and this time, magically, it worked;

4. I've now put it back into the Dock, from where it seems to launch just fine.

Hope this helps people with similar problems!

I really don't like this horrible leather-effect-torn-pages appearance of the OS apps, by the way. About as progressive and witty and elegant as printing CDs with images of vinyl records (anyone else remember World Party's 1990 album Goodbye Jumbo?)

I had the same thing.

Removed address book from bar. Replaced it. Didn't help.

Relaunched Finder. Didn't help. In fact, Finder wouldn't come back after relaunch.

Rebooted machine. Fixed both problems.

Lion is starting to feel like Windows. Spinning wheels of death. Needing to reboot to fix things. Not good.
