After upgraded to LION, Preview.app and Textedit.app keep crash

I'm experiencing the same problem with nearly the same error. I don't believe I have any symbolic links, I checked using my very limited terminal/unix skill set. I'm sure I didn't create them if they exist. I do have multiple drives, however, to the best of my knowledge, all of my system is on one partition with no alias to another partition or drive. I have a hardware RAID setup if that is a clue. My screen savor does point to an attached drive for it's slideshow. Any thoughts. Here is a post of the actual error:

After 10.7 upgrade from 10.6.8, preview opens, displays files, and can saveas fine, Application hangs though any time I select print. File type, size, complexity, number of files, etc. make no difference. Adobe rader and all other applications including Safari have no printing issues.

Are you just experiencing printing issues with Preview, or does it not work at all?

In my situation, both textedit and preview are crashing at launch.

Text edit opens fine for me but crashes when I select print (just like preview)

Same problem here. Upgraded to Lion and Preview and Text Edit crash at launch. I logged in as another admin account on my computer and they work fine on that account. Logged back into first account and they continue to crash.

I worked with Apple support for quite a while and ultimately the problem was forwarded to the engineering dept for review. It could be several days before I hear back. This is what we DID discover:

1) It is account specific. It only appears to be a problem with my main personal user account. Other accounts, or new accounts don't have this problem.

2) It is NOT a Preference problem or Cache problem as both of those folders in my user account Library directory were isolated from the problem and the crash behavior was still present. This looks like a good candidate for fixing in 10.7.1. Hopefully very soon!

I actually just fixed it for my computer. It was because I was using symbolic links for my downloads and documents folders (optibay). I removed the symlink folders, added back the default folders and then I was able to launch both Preview and Textedit. Once that was successful, I added back my symlink folders.

Well I don't think I would have intentially set up any symbolic links (which I gather are a lot like aliases although not the same thing). Any idea how I would search for them? Symbolic links are a known cuplprit of this problem, but I'm not sure how to find them if I have 'em.

The fix. . .

The problem is a Permissions problem. All you have to do is:

1. Right click on the root /Library Folder and selct 'Get Info'

2. Unlock the pad lock in the lower right hand corner.

3. Click on the + symbol to add a user.

4. When prompt add the 'root user'.

5. Give the root user Read/Write privaledges.

6. Lock the pad lock and open Preview.

For anyone else reading this, the Library folder in the root user account is hidden in Lion. Get to it by selecting the "Go" menu choice in the finder while holding down the option key. Then select "Get info" from the "File" menu in the finder.

Unless you have specifically enabled the root user, to solve this you have to add yourself to the list of authorized accounts, AND to set you as the folder's owner (by clicking on the small cog symbol and chosing the menu item), to allow you to set the priviledges to read / write.

Curiously, opening Textedit or Preview will change the owner to the admin group, but the trick works.
