Jul 25, 2011 4:47 PM in response to franceskby ryansalazar,★HelpfulCAT DV is what we're exploring to replace Final Cut Server. It's expensive, but a very powerful product. So sad to hear about Final Cut Server's elimination.

Jul 28, 2011 9:01 AM in response to ryansalazarby BenB,I'm reseaching several options. CatDV, EditShare, etc, etc, and NOTHING comes close to the automation, cutomization, efficiency, price, and overall usability of FCSvr. We'll all have to settle for second best. Apple really screwed us on this one.

Aug 11, 2011 6:14 AM in response to BenBby henkrek,I'm reading about CatDV and it seems really powerful. Maybe even better than FCS. They might provide scripts to help migrate to CatDV.
Especially the Worker Node 4.0 has many FCS features plus features I would have liked FCS to add, like:
renaming files, use regular expressions and XML batch.

Before you invest in CatDV, check this out.

Aug 23, 2011 6:03 AM in response to carlosr2by BenB,Both Squarebox and Extensis options have been used by photographers for a very, very long time, before Aperture and LightRoom came out. The long history of development I think gives them more credability.

Sep 9, 2011 11:40 AM in response to BenBby David Bogie Chq-1,Digital aset management is a deep and robust industry. We use Canto Cumulus at the enterprise level. It has taken us almost 10 years, no kidding, to get it up and running efficiently. Every bit of effort has paid off with major benefits including forcing our department to realize what the total elimnation of analog creativity realy means in terms of organization and retreivability. It has been a massively confusing and complex effort. Expensive, too.
One reason we ended up with Cumulus was it doesn't care what you put into it; any digital file can be cataloged, tracked, and maintained.
I do not recommed Cumulus unless you have needs to catalog mroe than a single type of media and have the time to ddevelop your taxonomy, keyword ists, controlled vocabularies, and a thesaurus.

Sep 19, 2011 12:03 PM in response to BenBby z3r0bit,Extensis isn't suited for video, and its interface is pretty clunky and slow. Can't recommend it.
CatDV isn't a bad option but lack's Final Cut Server's polish in the interface.
It would be great if Telestream added digital asset management to Vantage: http://www.telestream.net/vantage/overview.htm
It has a great node based interface for creating workflows that actually tops Final Cut Server's automations/workflows. Definitely a breeze to create them!

Oct 14, 2011 9:20 AM in response to taintworkinby BenB,Avid Inerplay is way too expensive and complicated.
CatDV is the way to go at this point. They're the only ones aggresivly prusuing the FCSvr market, has FCPXML incorporated, etc.
Now, if it's for a stand along Mac, use Aperture.

Nov 28, 2011 7:49 PM in response to franceskby Macpro Consulting,You can use Final Cut Server on Lion. I just set it up last week. I tried Lion Server first but could not get the web interface to work. There are a few configuration updates that need to be done and Apple should put out an update to addresses them but they aren't going to do that since the product is dead.
