After installing Lion, my usb broadband modem doesn't work

I have Xfinity Internet 2Go with a Franklin Wireless CMU-301 usb 4g/3g dual mode broadband modem. It worked great in Snow Leopard. I don't have WiFi access at my job. I need to access the Internet, so I use the usb modem. After I upgraded to Lion and got to work, I found that the usb modem doesn't work anymore. I have had to tether my iPhone to get on the Internet tonight, and I just can't afford that. I tried uninstalling the connection manager from Xfinity and reinstalling several times, but nothing I've tried works. I know both usb ports are working, because they have both charged my iPhone just fine. The connection manager insists that it can't find the usb modem, even though it lights up. I tried resetting the SMC. No, I don't have Avast or any other antivirus software.

If I can't get on the Internet, I will have to downgrade back to Snow Leopard (because there is really no point in even having a computer if I can't get online), and that sounds like a giant PITA (plus I don't know how). I would lose any software I downloaded from the Internet, wouldn't I? I'm really angry with Apple! Don't they know that many people need to use usb modems to get online? Why wouldn't they make sure they would still work, or at least warn us that they wouldn't work?! I'm really, really ticked off! What a waste of $30!

This is the danger of being an "early adopter" of a very significant upgrade.

Every OS update tends to throw up some incompatibilities or missing drivers... which tend to get sorted out over time when the vendors of the hardware release updated drivers.

In your shoes, I would try:

1) To use the installation disc that came up with the USB modem (or the software on the modem if it is there).

2) Check out with the vendor of the USB Modem and/or the telco for updated drivers for that devcie

3) If 1) or 2) don't work, or the new drivers are going to be a while, I would use Time Machine to restore back to Snow Leopard.

I hope this helps,

Rodney

Thanks for your help. I used the installation disk (didn't think I had that in my laptop bag, but I did!), and when I ran the old program, it mentioned that it hadn't been tested in 64-bit mode and that I might want to boot in 32-bit mode for best results, and that worked! For some reason I can't open individual programs in 32-bit mode, but I can boot in 32-bit mode, so I'll deal with that for now.

I was in the same boat - had a usb modem for internet connection - installed Lion and there you go - no modem.

Only supports Wi-Fi or Airport Devices.

Tried pressing 32 in stat up and worked fine the first time, but never again!!!!

We have had to go and spend another heap of money on a new Wi Fi modem to overcome the problem, but if we had known, we wouldn't have downloaded it in the first place as I quite liked Leopard.

Still going through Lion to see what I like and what I don't, but not happy with Apple at the moment after a stressful weekend trying work through the problem

Wow, it's awful that booting in 32-bit mode didn't work for you. I opened terminal and entered

sudo systemsetup -setkernelbootarchitecture i386

and I haven't had a single problem with the usb modem since. I'm hoping Xfinity will put out a Lion-compatible update for their software so I can go back to booting in 64-bit mode, but for now everything is working fine. I'm happy I upgraded, and I'm liking a lot of the changes. 🙂

I hope your experience gets better!
