iMac 2011 - no wifi connection after sleep under Lion

since i am using osx lion, my iMac is disconnected from my wireless network after sleep. (27 inch mid 2011, i5 with 2tb and ssd) (it states, that none of my preferred connections are available). sometimes it is connected ... but internet just won`t work.

besides that wifi is working just perfectly ... no drops no instability!

i am using airport extreme with 5ghz n-network, router is about 10 meters away (full signal).

under snow leopard i didnt experience any problems ... but since lion (which i am using since GM release) its really annoying because after every sleep i need to deactivate wifi and reactivate to connect.

i tried smc and pram reset ... changed my 5ghz settings to channel 36, deleted all other networks, did a reinstall (fresh!!) ... nothing helped 😟

this is NOT an airport station issue ... my other macs and iPhone are connected just fine.

please, this is VERY annoying .... if you have any hints i would be very grateful!

with kind regards,

felix

I have a mid 2010 27" iMac i5, I updated to lion when released for both my iMac and 2009 MBP. Both were having issues connecting to wifi after sleeping or start up. An update from apple resolved the issues for the MBP however it remained for my iMac.

I didn't feel it was an issue as I could easily connect to the wifi, it just wouldn't do it automatically. I read a link posted in this forum to remove all locations apart from your wifi, disable airport and then remove the following file:

/Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist

Then enable airport and connect to your wifi network. This creates the file again but has no left over residue from snow leopard.

This has worked for me and it is working fine now, just wanted to let you know what worked for me and say thanks to the person who posted the link.

Thanks

I was having the same issue with my 2011 iMac running lion, and it may be somewhat of a less technical resolution but it solved my problem...

Go to SYSTEM PREFERENCES

Then to NETWORK

Click ADVANCED

Under WI-FI there should be a box with your preferred networks

Make sure your personal network (the one you want to be connected to at all times) is listed FIRST.

Just click and drag to rearrange the order.

When I turned on my iMac for the first time, it picked up a weak network without a password and always tried to connect to it. I changed my personal network to the top of the list and now my iMac connects to that one after I leave my computer for a while.

Hope this helps

I just got a 27" i7 2TB/SSD I had the same problems and found out that it was the router!! Lions & these new systems are so powerful that any littel glich afects it. I wanted the 2Tb Time capsule and talke to many Appel reps most could not help but I talked to one at Best Buy.He said that the imac has wifi version R as dose the Time Capsule. Also keep metel away from the router this systems signal is vary senstive.I thougt it was the computer or lions as my toshiba i7 windows was on line. After getting the TC bolth the mac and the windows is blazzing fast. My wifi all in one printer had wifi problems as well untill I moved it off a metel rack.So keep in mind this system is vary fast & powerful so any singnal lose is componded! Use Version R wifi router! Keep away from METEL

After much frustration trying most, if not all, of the suggested solutions, I just tried the suggestion from Tendoformer above. I did this on both of my iMacs. It resoved the problem of connecting on waking from sleep. I hope this is the end of this issue for me, and for many others in the same boat.

I was having an issue where the wifi was connecting to my school's wireless network but wouldn't load the authentication page.

This solved it for me:

It involves resetting permissions in Recovery Mode (but through typing resetpassword in the Terminal).

Hope this helps some people!

Thank You very much CamCaGuy!

I followed Your procedure and the issue now is much much better! After coming back from sleep it still takes 1-2 seconds before internet is working in the browser again ... but the BIG lag is totally gone;)

Thank You very, very much my friend! I aswell tried SO MANY things I can`t even recall how many already 😉

There is definitely a hardware issue with the Airport card of the 27" (Mid 2010) iMacs that cannot be solved by software patches. It does not even matter if you are using Snow Leopard or Lion. I just didn't realize it before because I had the Mac connected via ethernet cable.

Now I bought an inexpensive 3rd party WiFi USB card and I got no connection problems at all! It seems to be the only valid workaround for now. I spent 30 dollars and my iMac is finally online for 10 days in a row without any problems. I can only recomment to do the same to all people going crazy with their constant connection drops.

Hi iiLandon,

When I installed Lion I had all the symtems mentioned in previous posts, Loading bar on start up, no wifi and most times telling me I had no Airport card Installed. I had to restart and manualy find my Network.

Just followed your instructions on my iMac i3 (2010) and I have wi-fi after the iMac wakes, this is the first time since installing Lion.

I removed all other old wi-fi connection put my prefered Connection first and the guest Network second.

4 Restarts and all is fine ...... so far.

News has broken that Apple 'might' be applying the next gen OS on test platforms. So it looks to me that I won't get to use Lion at all ... what a waste of money that was!

I bought the top of the range iMac at a massive cost so as to have a Mac ready for anything, and it won't play ball with Lion ... amazing.

Don't forget to give that feedback to Apple!
