Q: iMac 2011 - no wifi connection after sleep under Lion

since i am using osx lion, my iMac is disconnected from my wireless network after sleep. (27 inch mid 2011, i5 with 2tb and ssd) (it states, that none of my preferred connections are available). sometimes it is connected ... but internet just won`t work.

besides that wifi is working just perfectly ... no drops no instability!

i am using airport extreme with 5ghz n-network, router is about 10 meters away (full signal).

under snow leopard i didnt experience any problems ... but since lion (which i am using since GM release) its really annoying because after every sleep i need to deactivate wifi and reactivate to connect.

i tried smc and pram reset ... changed my 5ghz settings to channel 36, deleted all other networks, did a reinstall (fresh!!) ... nothing helped

this is NOT an airport station issue ... my other macs and iPhone are connected just fine.

please, this is VERY annoying .... if you have any hints i would be very grateful!

with kind regards,

felix

I've applied the update from Apple today and my iMac now seems to wake up normally by mouse or keyboard press. I notice that the Wi-Fi icon waits for a while before connection, as it does when using the power button. Maybe it was too quick off the mark before?

I installed the Wifi update too.  This fixed my issues.  Great job Apple Engineers!

Do not get so excited, yet! This update replaced one annoyance with another, even nastier one. Previously, my WiFi connection did not reconnect after the computer was asleep. With the new update, the WiFi wakes up correctly, but the connection started to drop at random times (without reconnecting) even when the computer is not asleep, and even at the time of brousing. Previousy, the issue was localised to the time of waking up only, but with the new update, it started to happen randomly.

The new update fixed my wifi reconnect issue.  (27" iMac bt keyboard/mouse).  It now reconnects to the WiFi when it awakes.

However, a very interesting event occurred when I tested the fix by putting the computer to sleep.  The bluetooth mouse would not reconnect!  I was left without a mouse to control the computer.  I cycled the power on the mouse but it didn't work.  Having no USB mouse handy, I hard shutdown the computer with the power button.

Whe the system rebooted I was informed that the there was no keyboard available/connected after the update and restart.  This fixed itself after I touched a key on the keyboard. I slept the computer again and lost the mouse.

THE SOLUTION WAS TO UNPAIR THE MOUSE AND RE-PAIR IT.  After that, it did not forget the mouse when I slept and woke the computer. (Go to System preferences, select Mouse, select the Setup Bluetooth Mouse button, select your mouse, then press the 'unpair' button.  You'll be left with the keyboard at this point.  Hit enter to select Done, then add your mouse back.  You can do it with the keyboard.)

AlexTk, I have experienced the flaky connectivity for awhile.  I wrote it off to many WiFi access points nearby, even though they weren't necessarily on the same channel.

THANKS to the APPLE ENGINEERS for fixing the wifi issue.  I'd love to know the story behind how this has expanded into a 16 page thread on connectivity, but we'll probably never find out.  Guys - if you can fix the intermittent connectivity problem, please do so!

Yep me too it hasn't worked properly. Woke from sleep just now failed to connect. I just don't understand why this is such a problem I really don't.

Krizbleen, I can not write off the flaky connection (when the WiFi just drops randomly without reconnection) to a bad wireless neighborhood, in my case. I have four additional wireless devices on the same wireless network (Samsung Android Gallaxy Pad, Samsung Android Phone, Apple iPod, Dell Windows 7 Laptop), but the only Apple iMac drops the WiFi, any other device on the network is fine. These devices are used one at a time, there is absolutely no chance of a heavy traffic on this wiress network. It is an appartment building, and there are many other wireless networks around, on different channels. Yet again, it is the only Apple iMac is having wireless problems, the other four wireless devices of different manufactures (including Apple iPod) are working just fine, in my case.

    Ashley:

Despite all the wonderful advice you are getting on the forum, have you taken your 27" to the

nearest Apple store while under warranty, and complained about this?

Perhaps it is a pliist problem as others have mentioned. Nonetheless, it is worth at try,

and you have at least a year, possibly 3 years to get it fixed for free. I may be behind the

flow of the note, so ignore me if you fixed it.

Interesting.  I wasnt having any issues with my WiFi. Now after the update, my iPhone keeps droping the connection. I've reconnected twice this morning and within a few minutes it drops again...UGH

I checked for iPhone updates but none so far.

    Pergrines -

Same here - I was actually hopeful as initially, it didn't drop, but then after some time, it dropped and dropped and dropped...very annoying and truly affects my ability to accomplish work.

Let's hope they come out with another one SOON.  I remember the big screen flickering issue a couple years back.  It took 2 iterations to get it right...

    AlexTk -

What you are experiencing has always been my issue.  When Apple posts a fix to something, they list what the issue they are resolving  We really never know if there are more issues they address.

One thing for sure, the problem you are describing is still there.

This update had my Mid-2011 iMac working perfectly for about a day. Then things got wierd.

When it wakes from full sleep (computer and display) the WiFi is connected, so that issue has been resolved. TWO NEW issues have now sprung up:

    1. The AirPort icon shows full connection strength (and my Network Preferences still shows my IP) yet my connection has clearly dropped. I know this when web page stop loading. Then I'll glance at Adium and it's been kicked off, twitter app stoped updating, and mail can't connect. Yet still FULL bars on my WiFi icon. So they didn't fix the problem, however DID make it look like it's fixed.

    2. It seems that when my iMac has issues, it is NOW kicking off other computes on our network. Mainly iPhones, but I have seen it on our Mini and also iPad. (not with our 2010 MB Pro however).

To everyone else having this issue, CALL APPLE. Especially if you have Apple Care. I use my iMac for work purposes and this issues causes a huge problem for me and my clients.

Apple is aware of the issue, but they need to know it's not fixed. My customer service rep was great and they are sending me an Airport Extreme and Express to plug my iMac into so that it doesn't use the WiFi. I hope this solves the issue until they can fix their software.

Seriously guys/gals, take the time to call Apple and let them know your issues. It makes the engineers job easier, and make THEM provide you with a temperorary fix until they sort it out. We pay a premium for these products and this is simply unacceptable.
