How do I disable "reopen windows when logging back in"

I am not happy with a "hack" solution either, but what worries me in the least is that the "popup box" still occurs.

I am also not using any hack at all, but just uncheck this "reopen... popup" when I do not want it to happen. I am getting used to it.

Just a gentle but firm reminder. Will people STOP suggesting unticking the "restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps" in this thread as it has absolutely nothing to do with the original post.

And I agree with everyone who loathes this new feature..it's such a waste of time having to force quit everything you were using yesterday...and thanks to kisuke3 for the key command solution control + option + command + eject.

Now searched for the samething ... and found out that when you go to

System Preferences > General > in the third section, you can switch off the "Restore Windows When quitting and re-opening Apps"

Thanks for the answer but that wasn't the question.

That's not what this thread is about. It's about all of your open applications automatically restarting when you restart your machine... not restoring windows when you relaunch an application. This is an option in the restart dialog that pops up when you go to shutdown/restart your system

This thread really needs to be put to rest. I'm starting to cringe everytime I see that response.

There is no way. Using 'control-alt-command' + eject (holding the three keys and briefly pressing eject) shuts down your machine without displaying this annoying prompt. As a bonus this method causes all running apps to not start when you restart your machine.

Edit: Just saw on this knowlege base article that you can also use control+command+eject to shut down all aplications and restart rather than shutting down as with the option key added.

You experience the app's not to restart while powering up after a ctrl-alt-cmd+eject shutdown?

I just used your method to close down my Mac Mini 2011 with Lion 10.7.3 and all the running app's just start up again, while booting up.

Is there anything else I forgot or didn't know about, that prevents the app's of staying closed while booting up?

Like many others, I too find this annoying. I'm rather baffled that somewhere in Cupertino a developer had to go through the time and energy to create something so undesireable. Talk about an intentional waste of time.

I mostly like apple products, but in some cases the "apple" is hard to swallow.

Apple now has an update available (at least for Belgian Mac users), claiming to solve this problem (screenshot below).

Anyone who has installed this update and has had positive results considering the issue?
Maybe there's a solution after all - one not involving having to force quit our beloved Macs every time? 😝
