shortcut for archiving in mail

Hi,

I would like to use a shortcut to use the archiving (Message -> Archive) functionality in Apple mail 5 on Lion. Creating a generic shortcut in System Settings -> Keyboard Shortcuts for Mail->Archive does not seem to work. How would one do this?

Cheers,

Hi,

I have successfully added a shortcut for the Archive menu using the System Settings->[...] and it works.

Archived messages go to a folder called Archiver.

Make sure you have correctly filled the fields in the system settings prefpane/keyboard/keyboard shortcuts/Applications Shortcuts.

Mine looks like this:

User uploaded file

Note that my menu items are in French so I had to type the menu item accordingly, i.e. "Archiver" instead of "Archive"

Hope this helps,

Cheers,

Quentin

Hi,

The name collision might not be the (only) reason,

both my menu item and archive folders are named "Archiver".

But it is still possible that Mail.app displays a short name for my archive folder, i.e. "Archiver", and internally refers to it as something like "gmail/Archiver".

There is a lot of guessing involved, I'd love to see someone that is knowledgeable jumping in the conversation.

EDIT:

Why keyboard shortcuts matter?

keyboard shortcuts improve your productivity alot and save you time!

How much time does it take to reach your mouse, click on the subject then click on the archive button. Probability not long: 1.5s,2s... But repeat it about 50 times in a day.

Multiply by the number of work days in a week and then in a year. Finally multiply it by the number of years you still need to do until retirement.

Now, consider you save 0.7s per shortcut use and say thanks to the one that will find how to enable that shortcut.

Cheers,

Quentin

I think I just figured out that the plain old delete key actually functions as an 'archive' button in Lion Mail. I've been testing it for a while and can't seem to see anything wrong with this method. It functions exactly like Gmail's archive button, as opposed to Lion Mail's method (which is to put it in a folder named "Archive").

I'd love to see if anyone else can confirm it works for them too. I still have a fear I'm deleting everything somehow, but I've checked in Gmail multiple times, and all seems well. Empty inbox, and the messages are in 'all mail'.

One other handy trick is if you hold down 'command' while you hit 'delete', it truly deletes the message. This makes going through a ton of emails much faster than using a mouse.

Everyone please chime in with your experience and let me know if it works for you as well. I haven't been able to find anyone else having a discussion about this on the web. Thanks!

Thank you hvantilborg!

That's totally true and I didn't realize it. I do have it unchecked (and I like it!) but I didn't realize exactly why it was working that way.

As a side note, you bringing that to light may have saved my ***, because I have five other accounts that I use much less often, whose check boxes where all configured differently. Now I can look into it and prevent disaster... Thank you! (wish I could hit the 'helpful answer' button for you, but apparantly only the moderator can do that) 😉
