Aperture Colour/ Color Shift with Lion

Hi I have just added Lion to my least important computer and in Aperture when I double click on a thumb and it goes into full photo mode it is fine for a millisecond and then you can see the Colours shift to a dull flat image as you can see from images. Not a massive shift but a shift nonetheless.

If you just view them with "Quick Preview" On they are fine but when the image is rendered the colours shift.

Anyone else got this or is it just me again and if so any solution?

I start to think that actually nothing is wrong with Lion's ICC color profile, nor Aperture.

Well, except for, Lion's JPEG decoder, that seems to fail to recognize the Adobe RBG profile embedded in JPEGs by my FujiFilm X100. (Some responders on this thread apparently have cameras that generates embedded color profile that Lion will recognize.)

These JPGs from my camera can be easily fixed. Using the GIMP, Pixelmator or even Preview to assign Adobe profile to the images, the colors are back where they are supposed to be.

Even though there is this workaround, it is not practical of course. I hope Apple will recognize and fix this problem soon.

Well, add me to the list of frustrated users. I exported a Project as Library from Aperture on my iMac running Snow Leopard. This morning, I opened up this Library on my new MacBook Air running Lion and noticed the misterious color shift. My preview images appear vibrant as does the full size image until fully loaded. Once loaded, the full size image goes from vibrant to dull. These are JPEG files straight from my Canon 7D. The profile name is clearly stated as Adobe RGB (1998) for these images doing the color shift. It's been more than two months since the original post and no solution is in sight. The 10.7.1 Lion update did not solve anything as others have indicated.

If anyone knows of a solution, please share it with the rest of us. Thank you!

Someone from Apple actually e-mailed me offering support. They asked me to send a system profile and some jpeg examples of the problem, which I did. That was about a week ago. I recieved an e-mail thanking me for my response, but that was a few days ago. I have heard nothing since.

I have reverted to using Adobe Bridge and Photoshop until they fix this problem. If it wouldn't take a weekend of my time, I'd go back to iPhoto in a second.

I am happy to share a workaround with everyone that I just came up with. I don't know if I want to go as far as calling it a solution, but it works for me until Apple figures what is actually causing the issue.

In a nutshell, for whatever reason, no ColorSync profile is embedded in the Master images associated with Aperture libraries. I know for a fact my 7D shots were embedded with the Adobe RGB (1998) profile and displayed correctly within Aperture on my iMac running Snow Leopard. The issue occurred when I exported my Project as Library and viewed it on my MacBook Air running Lion.

Here is an example of the lack of an embedded profile in my Master image:

Below the space: RGB line should be a profile tag. Notice that it's missing?

Here is my solution/workaround:

1) Close out Aperture and get to your Master images by right-clicking on your Aperture library and revealing package contents:

2) Now, navigate to /Library/Scripts/ColorSync and locate the Embed script.

3) You can individually embed ColorSync profiles to images or do a batch change like this:

4) When prompted, select the ColorSync profile to embed into each Master image. In my case, I chose Adobe RGB (1998). For multiple images, this Embed script may take a few minutes to finish.

5) When using the Show Info script, you'll notice that your Master image now has the correct ColorSync profile embedded:

6) Finally, reopen Aperture and notice that those dull images are now their original vibrant selves! No more color shift from the preview images to loaded images!

This maybe to easy to solve a common problem a lot of people seem to have with their Aperture photos being dull. But I had the same problem for quite a while. All I did was go to View (in tool Bar) and I turned off Onscreen Proofing and all of my photos in Aperture went sharp and clear. A problem I had for quite a while instantly disappeared. I hope it's as easy as this for the rest of you that seem to have a similar problem.

You're a genius!

Even though it took a while to embed every picture I had on Adobe (1998), when they were changed to sRGB worked perfectly. No more washed out jpg's!

Is it true that from now on, for every new import from my camera (Nikon D7000), I will be able to use the Adobe (1998) without seeing my new pictures all dull and washed out? Or is it better to just leave it on sRGB?
