Q: Lion Upgrade: No audio via miniDisplayport to HDMI (iMac)

Using the mid 2011 iMac and a (Denon1912) A/V-Receiver. iMac connected via miniDisplayport-to-HDMI-adapter to the receiver.

With Snow Leopard it worked. Video and Audio were always detected by the receiver and sent to the monitors/speakers.

With Lion the video-output of the iMac only gets activated when i put the computer to sleep and wake it up. The audio-output via miniDisplayport/HDMI does not work. The audio-options do not list my receiver - only the internal speakers.

Cables are connected on startup, A/V-Receiver is turned on and set to the correct channels before booting the iMac.

How can I fix this? Downgrade and wait for bugfixes?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7)

For Drownd100 and myself on newer MBPs, resetting SMC is different (found this article http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964) where the procedure is:

Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own

Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).

    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
    3. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
    4. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
    5. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
          Note
: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

However, I *have* tried this and even so, still have not found it to work. Hopefully Drownd100 has more luck. Have made an appointment with an Apple Genius to get the official word, will update here later.

Might be a layman's lame idea, but I thought I'd post it:from what I gathered, this problem already appeared under Snow Leopard (albeit not this common). The problem appears to be buggy support for the new Thunderbolt technology. On June 27th, Apple issued a Thunderbolt firmware update. What if we tried to run that under Lion? Did they adapt anything that might have an influence on these issues?

Frankly, I'm too scared to try it out myself, firmware fondling can become quite messy. But what about the theory?

I tried to install that update from June 27th just to see what would happen, and it said I don't need it.

I also lost minidisplayport functionality with the upgrade to lion. How did those of you downgrade back to snow leopard?

Well the Apple Genius bar know nothing about this issue, seemed to believe it was my "third party apps" that were at fault for it. I logged a ticket stating it's also happening with DVDs and Apple's DVD Player software (concluding it's not my third party apps) however they're hopeful bugs will be submitted over the week and bugfixes soon.

As I didn't set this machine up with Time Machine, I cannot be bothered downgrading, and will wait it out. Will update when some update fixes this issue for OS X Lion.

    All,

I have the same issue with a new iMac (May 2011).

HDMI Audio has disappeared during the Lion Upgrade.

Major pain as I just put in a 60ft high peformance HDMI cable with a repeater from my office  to the TV in the other room.

Everything worked perfectly under Snow Leopard, but does not work under Lion.

This will require a fix in 10.7.1. I don't believe there is an SMC or PRAM reset solution.

    Regards,

    Paul.

Nothing will help you fix it. Either you wait for apple to fix it or you are smart and return to snow leopard until it is patched by apple.

I don´t think, that anyone of you won´t be able to work without lion, hm?

Unfortunately apple did not tell us, that the output does not work properly yet. Thats sad and pure capitalism. No one can tell me, that they did not know this issue...

Same over here... MacBookPro 8,1 with BenQ Monitor/ Sony TV... picture is there, sound missing; also not available in output devices. Tried everything with assistance of apple support... nothing.... downgraded to snow leopard everything is fine!

I have the same problem since updating to Lion; the sound output via HDMI option is gone. I use an iMac (bought Dec. 2010) to Panasonic Plasma and only watch TV via BBC's iPlayer etc. and a very long HDMI cable so now I cannot as the sound from the iMac is too far away. Also, the resolution options seem to be worse after Lion as now the Mac OS bar at top is off the screen no matter what resoliution I select and there is a ghosted 'Panasonic' option under the monitors I can no longer select. Any word from Apple what they are going to do about it? If sound via HDMI has been dropped never to be re-introudced then I'd rather revert to Snow Lep. or heaven forbid consider a PC if Apple are going to go two steps ahead one back.
