Q: Lion Upgrade: No audio via miniDisplayport to HDMI (iMac)

Using the mid 2011 iMac and a (Denon1912) A/V-Receiver. iMac connected via miniDisplayport-to-HDMI-adapter to the receiver.

With Snow Leopard it worked. Video and Audio were always detected by the receiver and sent to the monitors/speakers.

With Lion the video-output of the iMac only gets activated when i put the computer to sleep and wake it up. The audio-output via miniDisplayport/HDMI does not work. The audio-options do not list my receiver - only the internal speakers.

Cables are connected on startup, A/V-Receiver is turned on and set to the correct channels before booting the iMac.

How can I fix this? Downgrade and wait for bugfixes?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7)

    Update:

I just bought a new MacBook Air 13" which comes preinstalled with Lion. This works perfectly just like my 2011 21" iMac did before the Lion upgrade.

I am going to try a clean Lion install (not an upgrade) to see if that changes anything.

    Regards,

    Paul.

I have this issue with a brand new MacBook Air that came preinstalled with Lion, have tried a few of the suggestions from this thread but thusfar, no audio and never once have I seen "hdmi audio" as an available option.  This does seem like a bug that hopefully will be dealt with soon.

    Cheers,

    Dave

I re-installed from scratch Lion on my 21" 2011 iMac and it had the same issue as before.

It's clear that there is an issue on some hardware as the brand new 13" MacBook Air works on same set-up pretty (HDMI instantly works and Audio shows up in Sound in System Preferences).

My new plan is to return the iMac to Apple as it clear this hardware build has a fault. Maybe they will own up to the bug / poor support of Lion for HDMI.

    Regards,

    Paul.

Sad to say 10.7.1 upgrade does not fix the issue for me. Tried multiple pram and smc resets after upgrade and still nothing on audio. I can intermittingly get video but never audio. Guess I can take to apple for fix or downgrade to sl. To bad because I like a lot lion has to offer but no external monitor and audio is a deal breaker.

Okay so I do have some good news!!! I bought one of these cheap minidisplaytoHDMI leads off ebay from Singapore and the audio now works! Going to upgrade to 10.7.1 later and see if it still works and try my old adapter as well. I know it ***** you have to buy another cable but atleast its a work around

Update, got a new adapter from Monoprice.com (the 5311) and it works now, guess the adapter that I had that I thought had audio support did not.  Hope they get the issue resolved for the older hardware that was upgraded to Lion soon.

I have the same 5311 adapter and can not get DTS to pass through to my amp. WIth just the cable connected and nothing playing the display on the amp shows PCM 96 kHz. I do get some form of DTS but the rear speakers act like the Centre Channel with only voice comming through and very limited audio through the Center Channel.

I'm in the boat as many other people, MBP 2011 (8,2), under Snow Leopard my Monoprice.com Mini Displayport to HDMI cable (yes, the ones that later got pulled, whatever) worked perfectly fine, outputting audio with no problem. Upgrade to Lion and it doesn't work.

I'm pretty sure others have had the same problem with other connection types (display port to hdmi adapter, then hdmi cable) so I don't think it would have anything to do with Apple "bricking" the old mini displayport to hdmi cables. I mean I used to work at an Apple Store and we used to sell a cable just like that, which later had to be pulled because they weren't licensed for the HDMI spec.

I'm just curious about those people who successfuly got it working after PRAM and SMC resets, yet others (like me) haven't. It's not all lost for me since I do have a connection for digital audio out to my receiver, but still, one more cable to have connected. =( Hope this (and plenty of other Lion problems) gets fixed soon.

I finally have my setup working. follow the steps in a previous Apple forum:

    • Use Audio Midi Setup to set audio to 8 channel, 24 bit
    • Click configure speakers option in Audio Midi Setup, and set to 5.1 audio

Then go to the Sound Pref. and choose the Receiver that should be listed

Then when in VLC (1.1.10) under the Audio tab Audio Device - chhose HDMI

Worked for me with no PRAM/SMC reset

Unfortunally your method didn't work for me. I can't choose the 8 channel audio in the Audio Midi Setup.

I am wondering if Apple is even planning toe fix this
