iTunes 10.4, Mac OS X Lion, AppleTV 2 and Screen Saver issues

G'day -

Upgraded to Mac OS X Lion today, and also updated iTunes to 10.4 (80). Discovered a quite annoying (bug) - when playing content from my iTunes library (i.e. TV show) on my AppleTV 2, my iMac screen won't remain in the sleep state.

i.e. I park my mouse in my hot corner I've got set up to "Put Display to Sleep". It remains 'asleep' no problems, however, when I start playing TV shows on my AppleTV the screen comes back to life. If I park it back in the hot corner, it remains asleep for about 2-4 seconds and then wakes up again. If I've got the screen saver active, the screensaver will remain playing, and the display will not go to sleep as per the time set in Energy Saver preferences.

If I stop playing the content on the AppleTV, then the screen remains 'asleep'.

I'm almost sure the issue is iTunes 10.4/Lion and not another application as I have shut down every other app and traced the behaviour to be only when the content is playing on the AppleTV. I'm assuming there is an issue with Lion or iTunes think it is playing Quicktime content locally on the iMac.

I'd rather not always have my screen running, with our pending carbon tax and all.

(Oh, I'm on a 27" iMac 2.8GHz i7)

Never had this issue prior to today's upgrade, anyone else noting this?

Have seen this issue reported elsewhere now as well. Reverting to a previous version of iTunes seems to fix the above behaviour. Come on iTunes 10.4.1 ...

Hey Kingsley, you said you've "...seen this issue reported elsewhere..."; if possible, could you add links to where else you've seen this?

I'm seeing this too. I thought I'd try to be tricky and go to the login screen, let the iMac display sleep and then try playing from iTunes on the appletv - but iMac display still woke up. =P

Hey Cassandra,

Yep - I tried fast user switching and leaving it in the Login Window hoping for the same too. I played around yesterday with it trying to find another creative solution but downgrading to iTunes 10.3.1 remains the only solution that I've found anyone has had success with.

Seems like the consensus is downgrade or wait for an update. Or just sync your content to an iPad if you've got one and stream to AppleTV via AirPlay...
