Time Machine could not complete backup. Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder.

Time Machine error message: "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder."

Any ideas on how to fix this? I've run disc repair, shut down and restarted the system - error message remains the same.

I just looked up the blog and CarbonCopyCloner was one of them he mentioned, along with SuperDuper, but even then I notice his reference is to 'backing up nightly.' So maybe wireless connected back ups are not even part of the consideration in his comments.

Correct. From CCC's Help:

". . . CCC cannot, however, backup directly to a network filesystem (e.g. AFP, SMB, CIFS, NAS, Airport Extreme "Airdisk", or Time Capsule)."

To be honest I would never use a wireless connection to do a Time Machine back.

Any backup over a wireless network is, inherently, less reliable than a wired connection. But as part of a robust backup strategy, especially for portable Macs, backing-up to a Time Capsule or a USB drive connected to a Time Capsule or other Mac is reasonably reliable. Since it's also far more convenient and automatic than having to connect an external drive, it's also much more likely to get done.

I am having the same problem. I was using a Western Digital WDH1NC10000E My Book World Edition 1TB NAS external HD to backup my wife's iMac. The WD HD was connected to a 500MB Time Capsule (that backs up my Macbook Pro) via Ethernet cable. Until yesterday (before the upgrade to Lion) everything worked well (since April 2009). Now I get the message: "Time machine could not complete the backup. The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features."

Any solution so far (besides buying another bigger Time Capsule)?

Apple changed the requirements of OSX's internal file protocol (AFP) to version 3.3. So unless your disk conforms to this it will not work as a wireless disk attached to an airport. Apparent DW are working on a fix....

That applies only to NAS devices (Network Attached Storage, or "network drives"), not normal external HDs connected directly to a Mac (or Time Capsule or Airport Extreme) via USB or FireWire.

Thanks for the clarification Pondini - you are quite right. Don't I know it!! I have a WD World Book 2Tb raid drive that was working under Snow Leopard. I have tried lots of work arounds but now I have 2Tb of unaccessible storage. Plus my iTunes library is on there. I can access the drive as a guest but cannot do anything with it. Do you know of a fix? Or I am stuck waiting for WD to do something? They have not been quick to answer my support query!
