Q: VTDecoderXPCService quitting unexpectedly?

I am getting it every time I open my movies folder either in Finder or in Stacks... I know one other person having the same problem but they can't fix it either. Has anyone else had a similar problem? Any ideas???

I'm getting the same with folders in Finder. Would love to know how to solve this.

    Thanks.

I have been doing some research and I think it is something to do with having too many films/files that need a preview/thumbnail in one folder. This is something to do with the fact that in OS X Lion they have changed the way Quicktime works - apparently it works in a separate client? I am no tech head, just repeating what I've heard. There is another forum where someone has the problem where the VTDecoderXPCService is taking up 30% of an 8Gb Ram Module with no apps open.

Anyone know how to solve the problem? I'm stuck.

That would certainly tally with my experience, as the error appears whenever I navigate to a folder full of video files. Surely others must be affected by this if it has been introduced by Lion?

Would love a fix from any of the smart folks out there.

I've found that by setting the view option of the folder (in Documents) to list rather than GRID, that the problem goes away. This would seem to tally with your idea that its a disply issue.

I haven't found that to work, I still get the error popping up consistently, especially in any folder containing video files. This really needs to be addressed. I've never seen anything like it on a Mac OS before.

Still plagued by this error popping up every time I get into the Finder. Are we really the only ones experiencing this problem since upgrading to Lion?

Still getting it here as well - I've tried closing everything (except, of couse, Finder) and I still get it.  Seems like there are times when I get it more often, but I can't pin down exactly when that is??

Hopefully Apple will get a fix out soon....

I hope so. I too sometimes receive the pop up error messages more frequently, but can't really pin down when. It certainly seems that the problem is linked to navigating thumbnails in Finder.

Is there somewhere that we should report this officially?

Theoretically – the popup IS reporting the problem to Apple….

It's happening the same to me in Lion.

VTDecoderXPCService is the render process of QuickTime (source Ars Technia Lion Review)

I haven't get the crash pattern yet, I'll take carefuly next time this crashes.

I'm in the same boat. Can't pin down the issue either. But it always happens when I'm moving through finder. Sometimes it keeps popping up when I just have a finder window open, other times it just pops up once, but always linked to a finder window being open. Very frustrating and yes, since upgrading to Lion.

Same here, started happening promptly after upgrade to lion, and happens all the time. I've not been able to get it to stop, clicking re-open can make it worse. Any new info is appreciated.
