Lion - Memory Usage Problems

Why is Lion using all 4GB of RAM running Mail, Safari (2 tabs), and iTunes? Snow Leopard was bad enough at handling memory, eating up every available byte and Lion seems to be arbitrarily using even more RAM. Windows 7 has zero problems handling RAM, there's no reason OS X shouldn't be able handle memory properly.

Can someone explain what Apple is doing here? I'm at a total loss. For users who just need Safari, Mail, and iTunes... I guess this works. But how am I expected to reliably run Logic, Final Cut, or Aperture with OS X using every available resource for Web Surfing, E-mail, and Music. This is totally unacceptable for a multi-million dollar software company greated towards professionals as well as consumers.

The following responses are not acceptable by the way:

  • Buy more RAM - I did that already, it will eat up 2/4/8GB, doesn't matter. Not to mention Apple still sells numerous 2/4GB confirgurations.
  • Buy a newer/more powerful Mac - this is a improper handling of memory issue, not a hardware issue.

I'd really love some insight into this. Thanks for reading.

I have had similar problems with memory with very little on in terms of apps. Is it only me but the printer/scanner search and install process seems to be going haywire with upto 30 hp scanner processes appearing on my activity monitor. Have a look at that if it helps.

Currently I have a disconnected printer and I am hoping someone will come up with an idea to help.

Goodluck.

I think common sense would dictate that you wait at least about a month before you install a new OS but we are all really helping as devs, or divs??? ;-)

No, I get it. That sounds like a serious error somewhere. I have Safari open now with a large number of windows and tabs, and it's using 230 megs under Snow Leopard.

I assume you have taken it up with AppleCare?

Not as of yet, but I've other threads on this forum and macrumors describing the same situation. If you scroll through the thread even you'll see a few people describing similar issues. I'll contact Apple Support at some point, though I'm guessing this is an issue that cannot be fixed by me and will need to be addressed later with a Safari update.

Thanks I'll check it out.

As I said though, Flash for Safari seems to run under it's own Process called:

Flash Player (Safari Internet Plug-in)

If I look at the Activity Monitor... the Process using up all the RAM is Safari Web Content. Which is a seperate entity from the processor labeled Safari, but most likely closely related.

Lanny wrote:

If you go to the Adobe site and download and install Flash, it will look routine, but you'll see a popup that says you're getting a beta version of Flash for 10.7.

This does not come with Lion. You need to install it yourself.

This may help your Safari situation.

My console has several "Spindumps" from WebProcess. These are really large, and I've only included the very end of them. Does this make sense to anyone?

There is definitely a problem with Safari under lion. Running NO flash (using click-to-flash), Safari Web Content process will, on my 4GB 2010 MacBook Air, eventually take 650 - 950 MB of Real Memory -- AND consume a constant 98% of CPU (one core).

Quitting Safari helps, but eventually the Safari Web Content process gobbles up your ram, cpu and battery life. As I write this, I have 8 tabs open, none of them with any flash, so there is NO REASON on this earth that static pages idle in a browser should consume 98% of CPU.

Apple, please fix Safari!! Moving to Firefox until they do 😟

I downloaded Lion on my Macbook and ever since, I have had problems with it recognizing my memory. I had 2GB in it, replaced one stick with a 512 and it will come up and run but when I stick a 1GB stick back in it gives me the chime every three seconds and wont boot up and I've tried several sticks. Apple said I might have to get the bios re-flashed, taking it in next friday to see what's going on with this and Lion.

Hi, Also I noticed that OS X Lion takes by default over 2 GB or at least 1.7 GB of memory. I had to update my 13" Macbook Pro Mid 2008 Memory form 2GB to 4GB and if I have some programs open including Safari, Mail 3.7 GB of RAM is used. Before with Snow Leopard I had at least 1GB of memory free by that condition.

I think this memory problem is not caused only by Safari and Mail and so on, it is overall OS X Lion problem. I installed Lion to my 24" iMac, Early 2008 (2.8 GHz, 4 GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB), and it feels like it runs 2 times slower than Snow Leopard. May be Lion graphics takes more resources, I don't know...

I hope some new update fixes mempry issues and makes Lion overall faster.
