Lion - Memory Usage Problems

Why is Lion using all 4GB of RAM running Mail, Safari (2 tabs), and iTunes? Snow Leopard was bad enough at handling memory, eating up every available byte and Lion seems to be arbitrarily using even more RAM. Windows 7 has zero problems handling RAM, there's no reason OS X shouldn't be able handle memory properly.

Can someone explain what Apple is doing here? I'm at a total loss. For users who just need Safari, Mail, and iTunes... I guess this works. But how am I expected to reliably run Logic, Final Cut, or Aperture with OS X using every available resource for Web Surfing, E-mail, and Music. This is totally unacceptable for a multi-million dollar software company greated towards professionals as well as consumers.

The following responses are not acceptable by the way:

  • Buy more RAM - I did that already, it will eat up 2/4/8GB, doesn't matter. Not to mention Apple still sells numerous 2/4GB confirgurations.
  • Buy a newer/more powerful Mac - this is a improper handling of memory issue, not a hardware issue.

I'd really love some insight into this. Thanks for reading.

Just weighing in... I know this isn't in any way a profound idea but after about a month of dealing with this BS I just switched to Chrome and ALL of my Lion memory issues have been solved. No lagging system problems, at all. It's totally unacceptable for the included browser to be this broken but in the meantime the system working properly is worth the loss of the pretty scroll animations.

It has to be extensions. I have been having the same problem since day 1 of upgrading to Lion. After some playing around, here is what I found.

I only have one extension installed 1Password. I have upgraded 1Password extension to newest version and Safari as well (5.1.1) after updating to 10.7.2 today. Still same problem.

Here was my test:

* Disabled 1Password extension

* Started Safari with 4 tabs open.

* Safari Web Content (SWC) was at about 75Mb memory (using Activity Monitor)

* Opened new tab and started WebKit's SunSpider benchmark test.

* It took 22 seconds to run test and SWC only inched up to 90Mb and held steady between 75Mb-90Mb

* Enabled 1Password extension and restarted Safari with same first 4 tabs. SWC started at around 90Mb.

* Opened new tab and ran SunSpider again. This time it took 4 minutes and 20 seconds to run same test.

* The memory continued up during that 4+minutes and never went down, ending at 790Mb.

If you want to see it real time, open three windows: Safari with SunSpider ready to run; Safari preferences showing the 1Password extension; and Activity Monitor with SWC highlighted. If you endable the 1Password extension and run the SunSpider test, you can see how slowly the test runs in Safari and how the memory leaks show in Activity Monitor -- halfway through the test, uncheck the the 1Pasword extension and see the test immediately speed up and the memory leak stop --- recheck and it will slow and the memory goes up.

You can see it real time. I checked AgileBits support threads and there is a little mention of the potential cause of the memory leak being 1Password, but they seem to have dismissed it thus far. I will post on their support groups as well, but we need others to see if they see the same problem and then barrage the AgileBits developers for a fix.

I plan to hit every possible support thread out there. Thanks Stamatgeorge for the other bug report website that I was not aware (I will hit it too, even if it takes a day). My concern is that the AgileBits usegroup moderators seem to have not yet grasped the concept that their extension could be one of, if not THE, culprit for the great Lion Safari memory leak.

Here is my problem: I finally got hooked on Safari many months ago (used to use Firefox) and it has continually improved with each version, but I cannot live without 1Password. So now since updating to Lion, I have to surf on Safari and then switch to Firefox if I need to use 1Password for quick password entry (one of the major reasons for having 1Password to begin with).

I cannot enable the 1Password entension on Safari, or my MBPro becomes unuuseable after a few hours of memory leaks (or I have to restart Safari every few minutes). This is very contra to the Apple mantra of "it just works", which I am a big believer.

Maybe there is more to this, but I am certain 1Password has something to do with it and so far AgileBits does not recognize it (and I have been monitoring their support threads for several weeks now). I appreciate the recommendations for the bug reports, but I would also like to find out if others have duplicate issues so that I know I am not crazy, and mostly so that AgileBits gives this issue its due attention.

Keep in mind that the Safari Web Content structure only came out with Lion, and AgileBits may still be blind to the issues related to the new architecture. As an aside, I also love Zagg products and bought their 1st generation iPad Folio case for my iPad2, the one which would not CLOSE. They shipped me a great replacement, but you have to wonder how that made it out to the public without anyone being sure that it could actually close. I respect Zagg and would buy again, but they missed it big time the first time around. I respect AgileBits as well, but i think they are missing it too with their broken extension.

I normally do not push things in support groups because someone has usually already brought up the issue and someone much smarter than me came up with the answer (or at least the best identified source). But so far after 3-4 weeks, no one seems to be really pointing directly at 1Password as the culprit. Would like to hear some confirmation.

I am a housewife, homeschool mom that only uses mail, safari, maybe word, calendar. No graphics at all, and my start up time and response time is ridiculously slow. I am an avid mac user, love it, but this is getting annoying. I have 4GB ram and also was told to "get more ram". I don't want to put out $400 to find out that is not the problem. I literally sit here, at times, just watching the wheel turn or the ball hung up for what seems like an eternity. I am very disappointed and hope Apple is listening. I talked to AppleCare and they said they are not getting any more complaints then usual. Maybe people need to start calling them and not just posting complaints. 🙂
