usually love the way apple builds stuff. but this time I want to throw it in the trash. I get over 140 emails a day (work) and this morning I can't find any of the 55 I already have looked at on my iphone. can't find a place to turn grouping OFF and if its not an option .. lion is dead to me.

How about to turn of the prview part of it. I just want the one liner like the old way

Go into preferences, then the View area.
Then select 'Use Classic Layout' it is the first opion on the screen.
Just adjust the message list window all the way to the right to get rid of the preview. I didn't want it either and found this option this morning. I don't like the preview because it marks messages read even if I am just scrolling up through messages with the arrow buttons.
I just had this problem and I already was using "classic layout".
I went back to mac mail and at the top, it says, MAIL, FILE, EDIT, VIEW (etc). In VIEW, in the drop down, one of the options is ORGANIZE BY CONVERSATION ..I saw that mine was CHECKED.
I unchecked it and now all the emails are fine again, showing one by one, as opposed to all my emails from one client getting lumped together.
