Have you tried looking at the two buttons to the right of the "esc" key on the top row of the keyboard?

Thanks for the reply. Silly me I spotted the buttons just after I posted the question and the problem is resolved.
it seems like the brightness function on the keyboard (next to the esc) does not work any more after installed Lion, reported this bug to Apple but no reply yet. Do you have any recommendation?
Get another computer. Something may bebroked inside and you don't know what it is. Take it to Apple store, see if they can do anything about else get a new one.
I'm fully aware of the function keys at the top of the keyboard and can say with certainty that they work sporadically after the Lion upgrade. This and the lack of stability with my WiFi connection are making me consider rolling back to Snow Leopard.
I too have this problem, i can temporaly fix it by going to the display setting tab, then clicking on the color tab. This resets the brightness for me, clearly tells me that this is a software issue not a hardware one.
I think the trigger is the auto dim on inactivity or perhaps something to do with the screen saver.
I'm guessing but not sure that this is related to settings imported from os x leopard....
My F5 to my F12 keys do not work anymore after installing OSX lion. I know have to adjust my brightness via system preferences and volume via i tunes 😟. I hope somebody out there has a solution to this.
