OSX Lion + 2011 iMac 27'' + Video = Freeze

Hello.

Got a brand new 27'' iMac, installed Lion. The machine freezes randomly when starting to play videos, either on Youtube, Quicktime, iTunes.

When it freezes, the mouse still works, but the machine doesn't respond to any command, requiring me to hit the power button and restart the computer.

Searched on kernel.log and system.log, and found no crash/error/message.

Anyone suffering from the same problem? The machine is pretty solid, been running some OpenCL kernels too and they are ok. It's only video decoding (possible on the GPU) that seems to freeze randomly.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7)

iMac 27 late-2009 i7. Have exactly the same problem, wrote an email to Tim Cook, recieved reply from an Apple PR representative, talked to a Tech Specialist. I was told thatthe problem is "specific to my machine, that there are no service campains" and ultimately that I have to deal with the problem myself. I haven't bought an extended warranty and I suppose this is my fault. But I find it really unimpressive that a computer that costs $3k+ gave a ghost after 2 years of use.

Nicely done Apple. Thank you very much. Hope you read it.

@Ull I thinkthe reply you got REALLY suks! I hope that you don't let the issue just lie and go away. The issue IS NOT specific to your machine I would go back to Apple, reference the 120 odd pp.of this thread and get some satisfaction. The 120 odd pages show that the issue IS NOT specific to your machine and has got to be one of the longest threads going. (I believe that you can refer to this thread by the info given about it in the emails to you about the subject.) Further, there HAVE BEEN THOSE who have gotten some satisfction, and, by hunting through the 120-odd pages (okay, so it is going to take you a bit of time) you can get specific examples.

DON'T GIVE UP!

I love my Apple products but am seriously starting to think about weaning myself away from them. Every Apple product I have bought has had problems. iMac 24 is now having the screen problem and the hd had to be replaced 6 months after warrant ran out. My first IPhone 2 had to be replaced 2 times and the second return only happened because I wrote to Apple after the local store gave me a hard time. My IPad 2 also was defective and had to be returned. I now have the IPhone 4s which can also be problematic. It rings when it feels like it making me miss many calls. I would return this also but then I may wind up with a worse refurbished phone like I did with my first IPhone 2. Not impressed with Apple hardware quality AT ALL

Yes, this actually *****! I had problems with my Powermac G5 (replaced with this iMac), iPod 6th gen (replaced), iPhone 3GS (replaced), iPhone 4 (had to fix it myself). Actually the only three trouble free Apple products I have owned were MacBook pro 17, the original iPhone and the Airport Extreme.

The funny thing is that I have to use my 8 (!) year old Asus laptop in the mean time and it works trouble free.

I do love Apple products but if they dont fix my iMac this time I might not want to buy anything from them anymore.

I have to admit im shocked to hear about all the bad product and service reports . I've bought, installed or managed literally hundreds of Macs since 1986. As a designer, ive used so many models over the years, i can't recall them all. Now, my own company has purchased 12 new macs (desktop & laptops) over the last 10 yrs. In all of that time, i can honestly say ive only had two "lemons" that Apple took care of right away. An old Quadra 840AV (an oldie but goodie) had a bad motherboard which they replaced, and a REALLY old Mac IIcx back in the day that had a bad power supply. All phones and iPads have been great. We typically buy refurbed straight from Apple to save a few bucks and have had great hardware everytime.

Our only annoying issue the last few years has been the blackout problem on one of three new iMacs, but that only happened since the latest Lion patch. Lucky for us, it's is fixed easily by the shift+control+eject - any key combo. Apple has opened a case number and all i have to do is drop it off the the nearest store and they'll replace the vid card.

Apple is far from perfect, but honestly I've have had nothing but great experience with apple products and service over the years. I wish i was paid for this... 😁 but i'm just a user.

In my experience, the best solution is to keep calling Apple, keep calm and try to expain the issue. Eventually they will make it right.

I am sorry to hear that. For me it is not even an MP3 player.

I have just writen a long email to Tim Cook (tcool@apple.com) explaining the problem we are having. I thing everyone who is experiencing this problem should spend a few minutes writing email either to Tim or to other high officials in Apple to bring this issue to their attention. They DO read our email. This way we may be able to push a service campaign for our machines. Together we stand... Otherwise the situations seems to turn into an ugly rip off.

I have an older iMac (2006?) and have had continuous problems since updating to Lion. My solution was going to be getting a new iMac 27" but since reading many of the entries in this thread, I believe I am better off suffering with what I have until a new iMac or the problems are resolved.

I had hoped a new iMac would have been announced at the WWDC. Instead it was an (almost) $4,000 laptop.

I been a Mac user since 2004, and since then I had one video card go bad in a Mac Pro, and then the whole iMac issue popped up with Lion. Frankly I am still ******, even though Apple took care of me to some extent. I had a 2011 June iMac fully loaded with 16gig of Ram etc.. Once Lion was loaded it was all downhill, it was in the shop 3 times and after the 3rd they said we can't fix it. So they gave me full credit and I bought a Mac Mini i7 Dual core with Apple Display, which was a mistake as far as speed goes, but it's been rock solid ever since. Reason why I am still mad, is Apple still hasn't addressed these issues on making things right, and as far as doing any high end video, the mini is good, but slow as molasses compared to my old i7 Quad Core. I will play the waiting game till the next models come out, and then make my decision. I think its there software not working correctly with there hardware, as my machine worked flawlessly till after Snow Lepoard 10.6.8, at times glitchy, but then when I went to Lion, **** was unleashed and I couldn't do anything.

Just a short update to my case. I have just received a call from the same apple representative who have refused me with repairing the Mac. Basically what she have said is that they will escalade the problem by forwarding my email with a link to this discussion to someone higher up, but the answer remains the same - NO.

This brings me the memories of an Apple ad where a PC user spends hours on the phone trying to find someone who could solve his problem. Sounds quite similar, huh? 😕

It doesn't take a genius (even at a Genius Bar) to figure out that there is "something" in the updates just before LION and Lion itself that perhaps isn't working with the hardware. What else can explain machines that worked well, regardless of age, up to and just before updates to LION were applied? . . . or that new machines with LION factory installed have the same problems as people who updated to LION?

This is one big reason why I stopped dead in my tracks at Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and haven't gone on to LION. Gandalf the Grey states--and correctly--10.6.8 Snow Leopard is a bit glitchy at times, but I can live with it. No LION for me until answers are gotten--there is the very real probability that things will be much worse.
