OSX Lion + 2011 iMac 27'' + Video = Freeze

Hello.

Got a brand new 27'' iMac, installed Lion. The machine freezes randomly when starting to play videos, either on Youtube, Quicktime, iTunes.

When it freezes, the mouse still works, but the machine doesn't respond to any command, requiring me to hit the power button and restart the computer.

Searched on kernel.log and system.log, and found no crash/error/message.

Anyone suffering from the same problem? The machine is pretty solid, been running some OpenCL kernels too and they are ok. It's only video decoding (possible on the GPU) that seems to freeze randomly.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7)

I took the advice of one of the posters here and sent an email to Tim Cook, withing a week I had a response from a support person who then called and discussed with me, I was sent an error log app for my computer and ran it as suggested after the problem had occured then sent the data back to apple, after a week they contacted me again and said they could not replicate the error and they would like to use my computer as a reference to conduct further tests and they offered me a brand new iMac as replacement. My comuter is 18 months old and I had been having this issue for about a year now.

I am very impressed wth the customer service from Apple in this instance and it certainly keeps me loyal to their product as they have been nothing but polite, genuine and helpful throughout.

After numerous emails and phone conversations with **** ** from Tim Cooks office, Apple is refusing to repair my 2008 IMac The problem has been detected to needing a new LCD panel which will cost me $525.00 Last year I had to replace the HD for $150.00. Let's not forget I paid $1400.00 for the computer in the first place When I mentioned this forum and all of our problems I did not get a reply Seems Apple does not ant to invest money in this machine but expects me to throw more money their way. Not to mention the IPhone 2 that I had to replace 3 times and the IPad 2 that also had to be replaced. Stay away from Apple as I intend to do on future computer and phone purchases. I can not imagine what their TV would be like I was very interested in the TV but would never buy one after my experience with Apple not standing behind their products

Gerard,

I been using Apple products since 2003, I have had one issue and I have boughten a boat load of products from them

iPhone 1

iPhone 3

iPhone 4

iPad 1

iPad 2

MacPros 4

Macbook Pro's 4

Macbook 2

iMacs 4

Mac Mini 4

etc...

The only issue I have had is with Lion and my recent iMac 2011 machine that took a crap after I put Lion on it, and I was covered with my Apple Care and Apple Store Gave me a credit of $3500 bucks, so I will most likely give them another shot when I look at the new iMac come fall with Mountain Lion. Again 1 broken computer in 9 + years so just the opposite experience. That being said, there is some thing going on with Lion and older computers or Computers that were not shipped with Lion.

Gerard,

Apple not wanting to deal even remotely directly with this thread is akin to putting its head in the sand. I think it stinks. People who have legitimate problems that are by and large the same are "expendable" by Apple-- that is the only rational deduction to be made. And you are quite right that the original cost of these "fine" products is high.

So, if we are indeed expendable . . . you said that you are going to think about non-Apple products in the future. Do you have any ideas and/or recommendations regarding brands for a pc?

Jul 19, 2012 9:27 AM in response to fvd

Feel the same mate.

My recommendations would be:

iPhone - Sony Xperia S (my choice) or Samsung Galaxy S3

iPad - Asus Nexus 7 (only $199)

MBA - Asus ZenBook

MacBook Pro - Sony Vaio

iMac - one of Sony monoblocks

Mac Pro - build yourself

As you can see the world is beautiful without apple. If apple does not want us anymore we don't want it either.

Ull,

I agree with you and the items you provided are a good list, frankly if I had that many problems with Apple products, which I have not, I would be looking at different options.

The Sony Xperia S is a good choice as is their stand alone computers as I still have a Pentium 4 Vaio desktop that is still kicking after all of these years.

Stay away from Dell Stand alones, as there support blows and my Studio One my kids used is down more times than in runs. Again, I haven't had the problems, I have had one, but it was a big one and I hope Apple gets there **** together! We will see.........

This is an old article, but a very interesting read....

Not Apple bashing. Truth be told we are all having the problem that you ate and Apple is blowing us off. The answer to your question straight from my local Apple is a bad LCD panel. Cost for repair. $ 525.00. Reply from Apple's corporate office.? Sorry. Apple can not help you You have to pay the repair cost. I think that is an awful response to a loyal customer. If you want to call that bashing that is your right. BUT APPLE *****

Can the haters start another thread like "Apple alternatives" or "I Hate Apple" and not turn the long serious thread into a playground.

I've had a couple of good tips from this thread which have brought an element of stability to my machine.

If it's a kiddie's "I hate you all" thread, Apple will never take notice of it (I doubt very much if any apple employees other than a mod or so would be looking at the thread to keep it legal).

Yes I have an ongoing issue with my computer

Yes I want it resolved

Yes I have had MUCH worse customer support on the PC platform MANY TIMES. Infact Apple has been very helpful on all other problems that I have had over many years with their products.

Yes I think that some Apple store expert's will too fast jump on a big solution like "it's the logicboard/screen/other expensive part. It doesn't mean that they are right. (If you are old enough to drive, have you never been to a mechanic?)

Yes I would like someone from Apple to ultimatly read the inteligent posts on this thread.

Enough, I dont want to add more junk to the thread.

Thank you for the contributers who have offered good tips

My problem is that ***** ** from Apple Executive relations called me and is standing behind the Apple Store's diagnosis that it is a bad LCD panel and the tests that were done on the machine were the correct tests. Can not go any higher than a rep from Tim Cook's office. Apple wants me to pay $525.00 for a new panel not THIER problem. If you have a better answer than corporate headquarters please share

Look, Gerard, if you don't have AppleCare then it's on you. Your machine is years old and no electronic manufactured in the past 5 years is considered to be or even meant to be 100% reliable for years and years. That's just the world we live in today. I am trying to glean some info from this thread on what might be the issue with my 7 month old (like the one referenced in the SUBJECT LINE OF THIS THREAD), as from what I can tell, it has been deemed everything from Graphics Card firmware and Lion conflict, to hard drive, to RAM to LCD, etc., etc. And your noisemaking is only providing interference and making you look like an ( I ).

I live two hours from the nearest Apple Store and it is a nuisance to take it in, so it's nice to be able to come here and troubleshoot so that when I do make the trip I can keep the "Genius" on target and efficient and get right to the heart of the matter. And I asked you very nicely to stay on the topic of the thread.

Forgive me if I'm misjudging you but, from your constant whining about how nasty old Apple is mistreating you, you sound like a pre-teen who has never dealt with the real world of warranties. Have you ever tried to get the manufacturer to pay when your car blows a headgasket after the warranty period has expired - or your TV when the power supply dies a week after the expiration of the warranty - or any home appliance under similar conditions?

There is no reason that you should expect Apple to make an exception for you when your complaint involes a failure after the warranty has run its course any more than you would expect that from GM, Ford, etc.

For the record, I have had about ten Mac computers starting with a Mac SE in 1987. On all, I have purchased AppleCare. Two of the computers had failures (one a power supply, the other the LCD display) shortly before the warranty would have run out. Apple paid for both repairs with no hassle. One other had a failed hard drive after the warranty period. That repair was on me which I understood because I had read the warranty and understood it.

I heartily endorse iDik's plea that the whiners start their own "Poor Me" thread and leave this one for serious posting about the problems and their possible soltuions.
