OSX Lion + 2011 iMac 27'' + Video = Freeze

I have what exactly the same problem as yours. This nightmare was started from the ML clean install on my iMac 2010. It is totally annoy to my daily work.

Apple PLEASE attend this topic and give us some FIX.

I'm not concluding, not even sure that this is the “fix” for the issue, but the other day I was talking with a very helpful employee in a HUMAC store (Hillerød, DK) which recommended me to update my JAVA to latest version.

Since I did this (can’t say why JAVA isn’t updated automatically) I have had no “frozen” screens and randomly “hard reboots”

Two more crashes this evening.

I now have a total lack of trust in my machine, I'm a photographer and find it extremely annoying having to save my work everytime I make a key amendment to an image on Photoshop.

Apple, SORT THIS PROBLEM OUT - or provide us with the ability to re-install Lion where this problem DID NOT EXIST!

I have the same issue, but everything freezes, can't even move the mouse. Have a iMac 2011 with the latest Lion OS..

Please look into this!

I had the same freezing issue as described by some others here. My machine is a 2011 21.5" iMac upgraded to Lion as soon as it came out. The freezes only happened when streaming video. The sound would continue and the mouse cursor would move but I could not click on anything and the only recourse was a hard restart with the power button. It gradually got worse to the point where every time I tried to watch a video it woud freeze up on me. I tried every suggestion I could find except wiping the hard drive and reinstalling the OS, which I was almost ready to do. After seeing NPalmquist's post above, I reinstalled Java even though I had the latest version installed. I haven't had a freeze since.

I've got the same problem while streaming video or with an intense graphic game on Mac OS.

I'm on a 2011 27" iMac with a 6970M.

I would really appreciate to see this problem solve.

I might have found a solution, not sure of the name but used the apple disk utility and repaired the authorizations on disk. No freeze since.

It could have been a good idea, but I have already try that :S

Yesterday I formated my hard drive, and installed a fresh install of OS X Lion, this morning my iMac didn't wake up from sleep. I'm pretty sure this is the same problem except that it doesn't

I just don't know what I should do.

I'm fed up with ML. Apple needs to get this fixed. I've told so many customers not to buy iMacs because of this fiasco.

I've also given up...well I'm trying to give up. Have asked my contact for details on where/how to download and reinstall Lion 10.7.x.

If I do manage to get hold of Lion, then I will never upgrade from it.

Had no freezes with 10.7.2

If starts again with M - Lion!!!

@Pink Mink: If you previously had lion via the app store you can redown load it from there. If I remember right you will need to go into your app store account pannel and unhide hidden purchases, then it should show in the purchased items list.

Going back to Lion was the best for me. I have given up on Mountain Lion atm and am advising my customers not to upgrade.

I have zero issues with ML, but then again I am not using an iMac currently a Macbook Pro and a Mac Mini. The whole Lion Fiasco roally p i s s e d me off and I will wait for the iMac refresh coming soon. If nothing is fixed with the new units I will never buy one again. Been a loyal custmer since 2000 and this is the first time I have seen a OS brick a computer to the point it is un-usable! 😟

I'm STILL with Leopard.

I can't move forward until all the programs I HAVE to use for work catch up... who knows we may have Mountain Lion 6 by the end of the year... That makes it really hard for other programs.

I still have my original Macintosh from 1986 out in the game room, kind of on display because it was sooo cool. When this iMac finally croaks, I may put it right next to the old one. "First Mac to Last Mac"

Changed the Memory and it seems to have worked!

Setup: iMac 27 Mid 2011, 3.4GHZ, 16GB (Crucial), AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2048MB

I started getting the White Screen about 3 weeks ago, about a week after I upgraded to Mountain Lion.

Right away I suspected the Graphics Card overheating (from my PC Days when this was common), as right before I got the White Screen the screen got pixelated then the screen shifted half way horizontally so that the Apple logo on the menu bar was in the middle of the screen.

But then I started reading this forum and tried everything that had been said here, it would work for a while but then I would get the white screen. I finally opened the computer and found lots of dust on the fans so I cleaned that - Same.

I then read someone somewhere about the memory having been the problem. So I took out my Crucial 16 GB and replaced it with the original 4GB (2x2) and it worked flawlessly for a full day of work.

But because I run Fusion VM Windows 7, the 4GB of which I gave 1.5 GB to the VM this made my whole computer really really slow. So at the end of my work day I figure I would put back 2 Crucial sitcks to narrow down the problem memory. Within minutes my computer froze and the white screen came back.

So back I went to my original 4GB.

Then I noticed my Toshiba Laptop had the same memory sticks my iMac had including the same brand, Samsung so i poached them to the iMac for a total of 12GB.

The 12GB been working fine two days now.

My theory, I think this became an issue as a combination of factors. Mountain Lion must be making my machine run a bit warmer. The fans had lots of dust which was affecting the airflow this led to heat failure on the memory sticks and left them weaker even after i cleaned the fans.

For now, I want to make sure the Samsung Memory works consistently for at least another 3 days then I will swap the 4GB sticks for the other 2 Crucial stick until I find out which one is bad.

Anyway, I figure I contribute back to this forum as many of the ideas here helped me.

I am sure this is not the last word on this subject as it seems there are multiple vectors to this issue at least it is one down.

I was starting to loose faith in Apple, but if it is the memory I added from Crucial then I will take back all the cursing at it.

( I was already doing the math between taking the iMac to Apple Care and pay the piper for a new video card or just buy a 27" HD monitor and go back to my Windows machine.

Please note, I am not blaming the Crucial memory, but rather my fault b/c of the dust in the fans. I had the Crucial memory working flawlessly for about 4 months before this incident.
