Q: OSX Lion + 2011 iMac 27'' + Video = Freeze

Hello.

Got a brand new 27'' iMac, installed Lion. The machine freezes randomly when starting to play videos, either on Youtube, Quicktime, iTunes.

When it freezes, the mouse still works, but the machine doesn't respond to any command, requiring me to hit the power button and restart the computer.

Searched on kernel.log and system.log, and found no crash/error/message.

Anyone suffering from the same problem? The machine is pretty solid, been running some OpenCL kernels too and they are ok. It's only video decoding (possible on the GPU) that seems to freeze randomly.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7)

    @socaleyedoc

Have you tried playing a flash video after your computer goes to sleep?

because flash doesn't use these codecs.

Hrm. I've only experienced freezing playing embedded flash videos. Maybe there are separate issues?

I have tried playing flash after it's gone to sleep a handful of times now, still no freeze since upgrading flash player. I just played 20 embedded videos at once on the same page without issue.

It depends on your system in my case those 2 files are in my USER directory of Quicktime. So look in there. ~/library/Quicktime

Add me to the list.  New iMac 27" purchased mid-July.  First iMac I've owned and this is right out of a Vista-nightmare.  Called support yesterday and they said to upgrade Flash (which I'd already done) and that it was in Adobe's hands to solve the problem.  I'm not smart enough to know if the video I'm watching is flash, quicktime, or whatever...I just know it's imbedded in a web page.  Arggggg

At this point I'm more annoyed that I can't stop getting email updates of all the new posts than I am at the video problem.

At the top of the page you just made this post to ... there's a box that says Actions, with the first one being 'stop email notifications'.

I have that version of flash player, and still have the problem every time the imac wakes up from sleep.

I just went back to Snow Leopard.  Everything works fine now.  I will wait for updates before I reinstall Lion.  My first Mac too -- I had put off getting a Mac for YEARS.  Very disappointed to find out that Apple has so much in common with Microsoft.  But at least I'm used to this sort of thing...

To anyone at the moment that is happy to compromise then just uninstall Flash player and don't watch any video clips at the moment, this will stop all freezing, i have been using my 27" iMac for 2 days now and in and out of sleep with no problems at all.

I know its not great and certainly not a FIX but it will stop the crash!

Another 'me too' to this thread. I am utterly gobsmacked that this remains a problem. I can replicate this on both my early 2010 MBP and my brand new iMac. Youtube/BBC/whatever playing embedded Flash videos causes an unrecoverable system freeze. The only way out is a hard reboot. Not great when you haven't had a chance to save your work. I am NOT rolling out Lion in my company because of this problem - and it is a problem, not an 'issue' - so will someone please give us a fix for this?

PS This happens with the released and the beta version of the Flash player... so no help there.

I jused talked with AppleCare. They told me that a fix will be available within the next couple of days (whatever this means) and until then I should put my machine into stand-by. Arghhh...
