Q: OSX Lion + 2011 iMac 27'' + Video = Freeze

Hello.

Got a brand new 27'' iMac, installed Lion. The machine freezes randomly when starting to play videos, either on Youtube, Quicktime, iTunes.

When it freezes, the mouse still works, but the machine doesn't respond to any command, requiring me to hit the power button and restart the computer.

Searched on kernel.log and system.log, and found no crash/error/message.

Anyone suffering from the same problem? The machine is pretty solid, been running some OpenCL kernels too and they are ok. It's only video decoding (possible on the GPU) that seems to freeze randomly.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7)

They didn't advise anything - there is no known fix.

Going on these forum posts alone we know that a fresh install of Lion doesn't fix it.

We know rolling back to snow leopard will work - however I'd rather not go through the hassle of rolling back, then upgrading whenever a patch does come out.

They said the engineers can take 2 or 3 days to respond to this case since it may take them a while to look over the logs.

I'll call them again on Friday to see if they have made any progress.

I myself have this issue with a brand new iMac! (Screen freezes w/ video after sleep but cursor moves) I have found temporary fix that will NOT ruin you beautiful iMac screen until they fix this obnoxious bug in Lion!

    1) Click on system prefrences

    2) Click on Energy Saver

    3) Slide the top bar to where the computer NEVER sleeps

    4) Slide the bottom bar to make the Display sleep after 10-15 minutes (whatever you desire)

I have had no further freezes after this minor tweek! Enjoy this temporary fix until we get an update!

    Here are my settings:

I just got back from the Applestore in my area to test the iMacs both 27" and 21.5" to see what they do when put to sleep and then playing video both Flash and.mov. First of all let me preface my remarks by stating 2 things. First of all they erase their drives TOTALLY before they open. They then put in a new Disc Image of Lion  on each and every Mac in the store that is on display. This was verified by one of the employees in the store. Before I started to inspect the iMacs I went to a MacMini and put it to sleep woke it up and played Flash and .mov using Quicktime10. It performed well. I then noticed that it did not have the latest version of iTunes. I questioned the same employee about this and he told me that it is to prevent someone stealing the tracks. This made me very suspicious. I believe Lion automatically installs the latest version of iTunes not 10.3.1. I went over to the iMacs. I put a 27" to sleep woke it up and played both a flash and a .mov using Quicktime10. No problems. I did the same with a 21.5" iMac. No problems. I then tried another 21.5" iMac and it froze! Nothing moved. I showed it to the employee and he shut the iMac down and started it up.There is something that makes me suspicious of the iMacs on display. Why don't they have the latest version of iTunes? I think they may be gimmicked up.

I have this issue, but also another.  I'm curious if anyone has the latter issue.

Occasional screen flickering, and texture corruption.  So UI elements in Finder may appear to be composited incorrectly, or texture corruption will occur in a game.  The flickering occurs on both the iMac's display and a 2nd display (LED Chimena Display) at the same time.  It even happened once while running Windows 7 under Boot Camp, to ultimately result in a BSOD as a result of atikmpag.sys not being able to recover after Windows' watchdog timer attempted to re-initialize the video card.

Just to update myself and reiterate what has already been stated: Upgrading to the latest version of flash did not fix this for me. I finally got another freeze tonight after two days without any freezes. Time to call Apple again!

Exactly the same problem here since past one week, when I bought my iMac 27inch i5 2.7Ghz.

I have tried ringing Apple Support, quite surprised to hear from them that its not their fault! Adobe is trying to fix it, and I should wait for the update to happen soon.

I then asked him if I could remove OS X Lion all together and install OS X Snow Leopard on my iMac, to which he mentioned that I could not go backward on my OS as it will corroupt my HDD as my computer has come preinstalled with OS X Lion.

Is this true. As I really would love to have Snow Leopard on the iMac.

    THE FIX:

Go to Finder -> Macintosh HD -> Library -> Quicktime.

In that folder I originally had two components:

         Perian.component

         AC3MovieImport.component

Essentially I removed the AC3MovieImport.component, and left the Perian.component. Reboot. (If you don't want to outright delete it - and I don't blame you - just copy it to the desktop for safe keeping)

The short explaination is that both components do the same thing (Perian is apparently more comprehensive) but they try to do the same function and create issues

Even after sleep mode, I have had no issues whatsoever.

This worked for me.  Not a single problem since removing AC3MovieImport.component.

But it seems unlikely that EVERYONE having this problem has Perian installed, so I'd guess it's a problem with just AC3MovieImport.

Completely deinstalled flashplayer, problem still exists. Guess it isn't flash related at all !

(clean Lion install on a brand new 27" iMac)

Problem didn't exist on Snow Leopard. So in my humble opinion it can't be a hardware issue but just a very nasty bug in Lion. Confident Apple will fix it !

Strangest thing they didn't notice such a big bug in their beta versions....

Well I bought a 27" iMac for my wife so she could use it mainly for photo manipulation and Farmville. Got it in late June and like a mug I upgraded it to Lion as my wife had been convinced by the new features. Same problems as above.

As I'm the IT Manager for my company I have to say that Windows XP, 7 and even Vista have NEVER been this problematical. I've told our Mac fanboys at work they will not be seeing Lion for the foreseeable future. You can expect some issues with any new os but not to the extent the machine dies several times a day.

Have to say this has dented my confidence in Apple and I'll certainly be making sure we do not upgrade our company iPads and iPhones to iOS 5 immediately. Que more wailing users but there you go.

In the meantime thanks for the advice on here. *soothes wife's brow*

Is it nieve to ask if you tried the troubleshooting guide in Apple Support? I note it says there is a Graphics update available.
