Aug 16, 2011 5:39 AM in response to rubenlxby Nightfae,At least I had the Firmware Update installed under Snow Leo. As I understand, that is a hardware firmware flash procedure, it is still in place.
Software Update also does not show this one up (but it did back then under Snow Leo)

Aug 16, 2011 5:54 AM in response to socaleyedocby pipqueak,"In summary - my 27" 2011 iMac would freeze when attempting to play video (either streamed via youtube or Hulu or something or even just an .mp4 with Quicktime). My mouse pointer would still work, but no response and I would have to do a hard reboot.
THE FIX:
Go to Finder -> Macintosh HD -> Library -> Quicktime.
In that folder I originally had two components:
Perian.component
AC3MovieImport.component
Essentially I removed the AC3MovieImport.component, and left the Perian.component. Reboot. (If you don't want to outright delete it - and I don't blame you - just copy it to the desktop for safe keeping)"
I went to the directory as you outlined, but I didn't have those files. Instead, I have:
AppleIntermediateCodec.component
AppleMPEG2Codec.component
Do you know if doing away with either of these will help? Any help is appreciated!

Aug 16, 2011 5:55 AM in response to Nightfaeby putnik,There was a version 1.2 and now I believe it is 2.0 dated June 20th. You'd need to check your installed version. I guess any automatic update will not be put out separately and would come with 10.7.1 or whenever.

Aug 16, 2011 7:24 AM in response to pipqueakby putnik,You do know that Perian has an update for Lion, as does Flip4Mac, not to mention Java and Flash, which at long long last seems to be out of beta.
I read somewhere else that residual DiVX components can cause problems too.

Look in Home folder/Library/Quicktime instead.

The short explaination is that both components do the same thing (Perian is apparently more comprehensive) but they try to do the same function and create issues
Even after sleep mode, I have had no issues whatsoever.

This worked for me. Not a single problem since removing AC3MovieImport.component.
But it seems unlikely that EVERYONE having this problem has Perian installed, so I'd guess it's a problem with just AC3MovieImport.
Except I believe it's Perian that installs the AC3MovieImport component. It seems odd that I've removed this component and don't have a problem but there must be many non-Perian users on here who still do.

Aug 16, 2011 10:31 AM in response to raphaeladidasby Steve Self,While I appreciate the commitment to help everyone, many of us do not have either of those files installed anywhere in our OS and still have the freezing issue. So while those files may contribute to some people's issue, the deletion of them does not help many others.
In our case the best solution is to set the computer to NEVER SLEEP. Then after a restart there is no more freezing. I do get some video pixel artifacts in long Finder lists after working for hours... but these seem transient and I hope clear up with the fix Apple is working on.

One train of logic might suggest that the solution to the problem would be to install Perian, making sure there is no AC3MovieImport.component.
Actually, I think I'm going to uninstall Perian and see if the problem returns.

Do you mean in general or persons with SL and Perian who are having the video problem?

Aug 16, 2011 12:09 PM in response to jdsiljaby putnik,Try the Graphics firmware update available at the Apple Support website: For iMac Graphic FW version 2.0 came out on June 2th so check your computer has been updated.
http://www.apple.com/uk/support/imac/intel/
Third party software is still evolving for Lion and versions you have installed may well be out-of-date. In particular Adobe Flash has recently come out of beta. Other programs you definitely need to update include Java, Perian, Flip4Mac and your printer drivers.
Any maintenance programs you use are important because old versions may damage things. Apptrap, OnyX etc should be priority updates.
Repairing permissions is always a good idea after a major installation too. I use the automation script in OnyX because it clears caches and refreshs the dyld cache. These can harbour old data sometimes.
Have I forgotten anything?

I've uninstalled Perian and reinstalled it, including the AC3MovieImport.component, and under any condition I can't reintroduce the problem.
It's just disappeared for me for no discernable reason, so I'm done theorizing about it.
