Q: OSX Lion + 2011 iMac 27'' + Video = Freeze

Hello.

Got a brand new 27'' iMac, installed Lion. The machine freezes randomly when starting to play videos, either on Youtube, Quicktime, iTunes.

When it freezes, the mouse still works, but the machine doesn't respond to any command, requiring me to hit the power button and restart the computer.

Searched on kernel.log and system.log, and found no crash/error/message.

Anyone suffering from the same problem? The machine is pretty solid, been running some OpenCL kernels too and they are ok. It's only video decoding (possible on the GPU) that seems to freeze randomly.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7)

To add to all of this, I came here originally because of a link from a macbook pro issue. I am a bit surprised that I haven't seen more crosslinking between threads. To add to this, as a macbook pro user (2009, 13"), I've tried all of the above solutions (including some from other threads such as creating a new user and not loading in any old material). I'm beginning to think that one user's experience with the GPU being half-fried might actually be the case.

To contribute something to this particular thread, though, OnyX indicates (and perhaps they have a separately downloadable update) that it cannot run under Lion.

10.7.1 is out.  Please report if this has fixed the issue so I can reorder the iMac.

"The 10.7.1 update is recommended for all users running OS X Lion and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability and compatibility of your Mac, including fixes that:
Address an issue that may cause the system to become unresponsive when playing a video in Safari
Resolve an issue that may cause system audio to stop working when using HDMI or optical audio out
Improve the reliability of Wi-Fi connections
Resolve an issue that prevents transfer of your data, settings, and compatible applications to a new Mac running OS X Lion"

Yes, as I just said on here, OnyX does have an update for Lion, as do Apptrap, Flash, Perian, Flip4Mac, Java etc. Some of these are quite recent, so you need to keep your eye on the ball. Also the iMac Graphics FW 2.0 update is important.

Coming across from SL is not quite so simple but once these are updated it gets easier. I have never had a crash or freeze or wifi problem either with Lion. But I do check out my software inventory very carefully.

10.7.1 is out too. Hooray but only 17.4MB?

10.7.1 fixes the freezing after sleep issue for me. I've tested it multiple times and it seems that Apple finally fixed it!

Since Adobe Flash also only just came out of beta, (do you have 10.3.183.5 installed yet?), we wont know who fixed what. A bit of both I think.

    FYI

Just installed the LION OS update, rebooted, played video, put computer to sleep, went to YouTube and played another video.  No more lockups or frozen screen, the patch appears to have worked!

I'm running OS X Lion 10.7 (Update must not be availale yet in the UK), but since I bought my new 27" iMac 2011 model early this month, I've not had any issues at all...

I upgraded my iMac from Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on the first day without any problems

10.7.1 is available in the UK. Run the Software Updater.
