Q: OSX Lion + 2011 iMac 27'' + Video = Freeze

Hello.

Got a brand new 27'' iMac, installed Lion. The machine freezes randomly when starting to play videos, either on Youtube, Quicktime, iTunes.

When it freezes, the mouse still works, but the machine doesn't respond to any command, requiring me to hit the power button and restart the computer.

Searched on kernel.log and system.log, and found no crash/error/message.

Anyone suffering from the same problem? The machine is pretty solid, been running some OpenCL kernels too and they are ok. It's only video decoding (possible on the GPU) that seems to freeze randomly.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7)

    All seems well again

    1. Put 2011 imac to sleep

    2. Wake up imac

    3.  Play video

    4.  No Freeze

    Yay.

For those saying this is fixed did you let your iMac go to sleep on its own and for how long.  This is the real issue.  I tried to recreate the issue by putting my iMac to sleep but it never to duplicate until the iMac went to sleep on its own for more then an hour.  Running Lion of course.

    Curious

    What's included?

The OS X Lion v10.7.1 Update is recommended for all users running OS X Lion and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability and compatibility of your Mac, including fixes that:

    • Address an issue that may cause the system to become unresponsive when playing a video in Safari. What about Chrome and Firefox?
    • Resolve an issue that may cause system audio to stop working when using HDMI or optical audio out.
    • Improve the reliability of Wi-Fi connections.
    • Resolve an issue that prevents transfer of your data, settings, and compatible applications to a new Mac running OS X Lion.
    • Resolve an issue in which an admin user account could be missing after upgrading to OS X Lion.  ***?  Really?

Finally a fix!  I have had to hard reset my new iMac at least 20 times because of this issue.  Can anyone tell me if it's possible my hard drive can be slightly corrupted or damaged by doing this?  My friend had a Macbook a while back that went bad and Apple asked him if he had ever hard reset and told him that was the problem.

    Thanks.

Finally! The 10.7.1 update seems to have completely solved my video freezing issue.  Thanks Apple. Lion is now purring.

Also, and possibly on a connected note, I received an email today from Apple with a confirmation of an AppleCare Protection Plan on my new iMac.  It has my serial number and product description on the details of the email and says the plan extends until 20 June 2014.  The funny thing is - I havn't paid for any AppleCare Protection Plan???  Could this possibly be a freeby because I left a bug feedback with Apple over this video freeze issue?  Just wondering if anyone else has had anything similar??? If it really is a free protection plan then Apple has just well and truly won me over again (as if I really ever doubted them!).

Well opening itunes no longer distorys OpenGL peformance so thats a good start. The flash judder issue remains on some videos but that might be an Adobe issue. I also wouldn't worry about the fact they didn't mention other browers, they never do.

YES... it was only when I read your respond which prompted me to click the Apple icon for updates. Sweet. I've just downloaded the update. Now, let's see what happens......

So, put the Mac to sleep. Then went straight to youtube.. which I got a prompt to download the latest Adobe.. in which I did. Then poof! All is well. For now... very happy Apple user right here.

I knew it would be just a matter of time.

Has anyone seen any differences in temperatures? I was idling at around 70 to 80 celcius and in snow leopard would idle around 50-60. The graphic artifacts that I would get on occasion was likely caused by this and I just want to know if anyone has seen and dips in temps. Thanks.
