Q: OSX Lion + 2011 iMac 27'' + Video = Freeze

Hello.

Got a brand new 27'' iMac, installed Lion. The machine freezes randomly when starting to play videos, either on Youtube, Quicktime, iTunes.

When it freezes, the mouse still works, but the machine doesn't respond to any command, requiring me to hit the power button and restart the computer.

Searched on kernel.log and system.log, and found no crash/error/message.

Anyone suffering from the same problem? The machine is pretty solid, been running some OpenCL kernels too and they are ok. It's only video decoding (possible on the GPU) that seems to freeze randomly.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7)

My problem isn´t solved, too. iMac late 2009, freezing also without playing video. No success after installing 10.7.1.

My new iMac 21.5" delivered today. I uploaded Mac OS X to 10.7.1. No screen freee was found. I forced it to sleep while playing with video (both YouTube and QuickTime). After wakeup, everything resumed normal. Further than that, I extended the iMac to 2nd monitor using miniDisplay<>DVI cable. Did the same test but no screen freeze was found.

    It seems getting better.

I'm pretty annoyed that 10.7.1 didn't help my Mac Pro.

I still get the same freeze when playing videos in iTunes or QuickTime Player

I never put my computer to sleep

    Fresh install didn't help

    Changing video cards didn't help

    New hard drive didn't help

    Uninstalling QuickTime 7 didn't help

I reset the PRAM and it didn't help

I just don't know what to do anymore. I'm getting really sick of this!

I'm the type of person that doesn't install third party extensions too. The only third party extensions I had were Flip4Mac (to play WMV files) but I uninstalled it and it still froze. Also, I tried installing Lion on a blank hard drive (brand new) and left everything as default (as if it just came off the assembly line) and I still got the video freeze.

Is there anything else I can try?

I probably would try to contact Apple.

    You probably already tried though...

    Just-a-Spaz,

    That sounds terribly frustrating!

Have you tried running an AHT (Apple Hardware Test) to see if there are any failures? Also, do you currently have AppleCare? If you do, you might want to get the machine looked at in a store.

You have done quite a bit of troubleshooting as it is.. it's either an issue with the O/S or a different component you have no tried replacing.

What sort of video are you trying to play? Try downloading an HD movie trailer from apple's website and see if it then freezes on you.

I hear Qucktime is still 32 bit and I had to remove all my movies from iTunes as it could not run them (I had converted their container format to .mov from. avi)

I believe it may have been possible by changing iTunes to 32 bit mode (in Finder>Applications go to Get Info and check the box "Use 32 bit mode"). Something to try?

If you've been in the works, I'd check the video card is seated properly.

I think there are hardware tests you can run too:

    http://www.apple.com/uk/support/imac/intel/

Do you have version 2.0 of the Graphics firmware installed?

    etc

    @eculley:

I haven't tried the hardware test, but my computer runs fine under Snow Leopard without issues. I can play all the same videos with no freeze.

The videos I'm trying to play are HD Podcasts (specifically Jake and Amir), but I've also tried with smaller SD videos that I have in my movies folder (old videos I downloaded long ago and such) and those also make it freeze.

I don't have AppleCare unfortunately... that ran out long, long ago, but I'll try the Apple Trailers thing tonight to see if it still happens. Weird that I don't have flash video issues at all.

If it means anything... I tried booting my computer solely from the original video card it came with and it comes out all distorted (like a snowy TV channel) so I may just open up the case and pull it completely out to see if that's what's causing my computer to freak out. I hope not, but maybe there's something in Lion that looks at all your video cards when you play a video or something... I don't know. I may also try yanking out my Windows 7 partition just for the heck of it.

    @putnik

Like I said before, I replaced my ATI card with my Nvidia card and then when I found out that I still had the same issue, I put the ATI card back (I like it better) so I doubt there's a seating problem with the card itself.

I'll try 32-bit mode tonight to see if it helps. I certainly haven't thought of that one.

Also, I don't know about the graphics firmware thing. Would it show up in Software Update? I've installed all the updates that Software Update found.

    Thanks for the suggestions guys!

I'm happy to report that Lion update 10.7.1 seems to have fixed the freezing video after sleep issue on my mid(2011) 27" iMac.  Haven't had a single freeze after updating yesterday.  Multiple times waking after sleep, even after all night sleep, no freezes on Flash web-based videos, Quicktime, or iTunes.  Thank you Apple!  It only took a month.

Once again, adding my name to the list of those where 10.7.1 seems to have CURED the problem.  No more freezing of videos in Safari, Firefox, Quick Time Player after waking up from sleep. YAY!!!

I have to also report problem with graphics under mac os x 10.7.1 on my macbook pro 15-inch, 2.53GHz, Mid 2009. I have problem with 3D graphics. When I try to play some maps in game Killing floor, random parts of screen starts to blinking after loading map and map is not shown so that it is not possible to play. After force quitting from app Killing floor, screen freezes and I'm not able to do anything. Only way is restarting mac. Strange is that this is happening only on some maps, not on all maps.

    2D graphics works properly.

Update v10.7.1 fixed the crashing and the dropping of WiFi after sleep and the sporadic problems playing videos in Safari. Gotta remember to wait a bit when 10.8 arrives.

HORRAY! I think I finally fixed my specific issue!!!

In case anyone missed it, I was having an issue with videos freezing after playing 2 or more videos in a row in Lion on my Mac Pro.

I was almost all out of ideas when I decided to take my unused Nvidia GeForce 7300 out (came with the computer, so I just left it in the top slot) because I'm running my ATI 4870 anyway.

Anyways... needless to say, no more freezing!!! I hope it stays this way!

Oh, also, I took out the 2 512MB RAM sticks (Apple Brand) that came with my computer, so now I just have 4x1GB sticks in there. I don't know if that solved the problem or if it was the video card thing, so I thought I'd at least mention it.

EDIT: Never mind, I just put the 2x512MB RAM sticks back in and video is still working great!!! So, the problem was just the fact that I had that old video card still installed. Maybe it's not compatible with Lion and I didn't know. I'm excited now!

Whew.... thanks all for trying to help me before!
