Q: OSX Lion + 2011 iMac 27'' + Video = Freeze

Hello.

Got a brand new 27'' iMac, installed Lion. The machine freezes randomly when starting to play videos, either on Youtube, Quicktime, iTunes.

When it freezes, the mouse still works, but the machine doesn't respond to any command, requiring me to hit the power button and restart the computer.

Searched on kernel.log and system.log, and found no crash/error/message.

Anyone suffering from the same problem? The machine is pretty solid, been running some OpenCL kernels too and they are ok. It's only video decoding (possible on the GPU) that seems to freeze randomly.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7)

just to report that i've have had no screen freeze since installing the latest update.  Have played flash, HTML 5, Quicktime without incident after waking from sleep on June 2011 iMac 27"

So fingers crossed that update has solved the issue.

Just another report for my 2010 iMac 27" running Lion (10.7.1): Frequently locks up, mouse cursor remains visible and can be moved. The machine needs to be shut down hard with the power button every time this happens. Not only when playing videos, also while surfing and/or gaming.

I have upgraded the RAM to 12GB but the AHT cannot find anything wrong with the memory even on extended test mode.

You're seeing the problem after applying the 10.7.1 update? Interesting, most people who have posted here say it fixes the problem. I didn't have any freezes on my iMac, but I had to send it out for service today for another problem, and I don't think just the 1 1/2 days I ran it following the update were enough to confirm that it's a fix.

I was one of the first people to report this problem and i instantlly downgraded to SL, now with this update i went back to lion and found that everything is working just fine. I'm sure there are still a few bugs going around but for the most part things seem to have been fixed. Maybe ur problem isn't the same problem as the one fixed in the update.

I've updated to 10.7.1, no hangs now.

However, I'm still occasionally experienceing severe graphical glitches mainly after playing Flash video.

    Hi!

After 10.7.1 update no hangs so far. So 3 days without need to reboot is my new record with Lion...

3-problems causing still problems for me:

    1. Finder is showing graphical clitches on screen frequently so display driver is not fully fixed but getting better.
    2. QT is not able to play AVI DivX files have to use VLC or PLEX
    3. Lion doesn't go sleep only display is swithched off

Hope that Apple is going to address the rest of problems ASAP.

    Hi

I had the problem with the AVI files.

Here's what I did to resolve it.

    1) Fully remove Perian 1.2.3

    2) Find and install Perian version 1.2.2. It is still available on the internet but it takes a little looking for.

Once I installed the earlier version, all worked fine again.

    Hope this helps

No really, I had less occurences of the system locking up than before the update, but it happened twice since 10.7.1. Although in the last 40h or so everything went fine. Fingers crossed...

I've read pretty much all the posts here and I kind of think you all have it kind of wrong. The problems you are experiencing is due to bugs in both the video drivers (not GPU specific) and OpenGL. This is not a bug specifc to the iMac, its a bug that exists across all systems running Lion. This has been conformed by Apple by a undisclosed source. They are aware of the issue and hopefully they will fix it so I can play Assassins Creed 2!

The 10.7.1 patch seems to fix the freezes on my 2011 iMac as well.  Has gone to sleep a number of times, and it plays video fine now.  Thanks Apple!

I seem to be down to occasional crashes after updating with 10.7.1 on MS Office applications and Chrome. Neither has been updated to support Lion as yest (my understanding).

Ever since I updated my 2011 MacBook Pro from OS 10.6.8 to 10.7 (and onto 10.7.1), it has had numerious freezes in the middle of non-video work.

Since Lion was not clean-installed, it was difficult to troubleshoot. So, I decided to start from scratch with a clean install of Lion. Without any additional 3rd-party apps installed, the fresh Lion ran well. Then, I installed Flash Player 10.3.183.5. This brought back frequent freezes. So, I uninstalled it and installed Flash Player Beta 2 11.0.d1.98. This has stopped the frequent freezes.

I am aware that other posters have reported possible other causes for freezes. But, I wanted to share the above experience with users who have fresh-installed Lion.
