Dec 29, 2011 6:52 PM in response to Studio Kby 2rodee,I can't get on to iTunes on the iMac - it is asking me to upgrade, but I need 10.5 OS to download the iTunes upgrade.. Not a big deal I guess.. grrrr. Thanks for your responses.. I really do appreciate knowing that it's not just "operator error."
ALL Apple has to do is make patches so that SL and Lion runs as advertised.. then we can move forward!!
sign me,
iMad.

Dec 29, 2011 7:37 PM in response to 2rodeeby Studio K,2rodee,
Try using VLC instead of iTunes. It plays any audio or video format. The library interface is not as appealing as iTunes, but it will hopefully run on Tiger.
What does your iMac look like? Is it silver (aluminum) or is it white?

Dec 29, 2011 7:56 PM in response to Studio Kby 2rodee,Silver... I just did a serial number search on Apple. This iMac was born in early 2007. Jeez... I didn't know the install disks were Tiger.
I KNOW I have the Leopard install disks to the MBP in a really safe place... For the life of me I don't know where that place is.
If I can get this scanner and laser printer to work with Tiger, I'll stop complaining for a little while. My bank just introduced "scanned" deposits.. and I was sooo excited! Everything is unplugged for fear of a freeze.
VLC.. I've never heard of it - but I'll surely go take a look! I'm sure the other half of this partitioned hard drive (SL) is laughing it's azz off. LOL!
Thanks for the tip!

Dec 29, 2011 9:43 PM in response to Studio Kby 2rodee,I just found a MAC OS X LEOPARD disk! It says CPU Drop-in DVD Version 10.5. Is that an install disk?
-
Dec 30, 2011 5:58 AM in response to 2rodeeby 2rodee,UPDATE: CPU Drop in CD working. It's installing as we speak. Apparently this type of disk is an "update disk" that will bring you from Tiger (10.4) to Leopard (10.5). It is NOT going to do a fresh install of Leopard.
Will wait until Apple gets the kinks out of SL and Lion before I dare touch that again!!
THANK YOU!
Helen

Jan 6, 2012 11:31 AM in response to rubenlxby DavePDX07,Discouraging to see a nearly 100 page with no sign of a solution.
One more victim here. iMac 20" (5,1), 2 GB RAM, machine freezes but allows the mouse pointer to move. OSX 10.7.2, clean install (even formatted the drive), all updates applied. NO other software installed, still exhibits the problem. Machine was fine under Snow Leopard.
Seems to happen most often in Safari, but then again, that's certainly the most often used app. The symptom can occur even on a cold machine after a clean start. I just opened Safari, browsed to a known good page to download an installer and that was as far as I got. Page didn't load, no spinning wheel of death, just a frozen box except for the mouse was still movable.
I'm between a rock and a hard place, since I need Lion to run a particular app. But at this rate, I'll have to return to SL, since the machine is unusable this way.

Jan 6, 2012 11:39 AM in response to DavePDX07by Gandalf The Grey,Sorry to hear that, my superfast i7 iMac went South right after I installed some updates via SL and then when I went the Lion route it got worse. Ironically my MacBook Pro with Lion is perfectly fine. I got so frustrated with the freeze ups I made a big enough stink and Apple was generous enough to give me a instore credit. So now I am using a Decked out Mac Mini loaded for now, till Apple gets these issues with iMacs and there software under control. I can give them one thing, this is the first major repair I have ever had since 2003 when I first started using Apple Products, I just hope they get this issue fixed before I look at another iMac. If I where you I would go back to the software that was the most stable with your iMac. I switched back from Lion to SL, and still had issues, so the only software that was stable on my machine was the first install of SL without any updates. Good Luck!

Jan 6, 2012 11:53 AM in response to Gandalf The Greyby DavePDX07,What's particularly troublesome to me, is how widespread this issue seems to be, and the fact that it occurs on many different generations of hardware.
Glad to hear your Mini is working well, as I just ordered one of those as well (to replace a different machine). I ordered the server version with 8GB and an SSD only, and plan to use it as a development machine.
Once the Mini arrives, I'll likely just revert the iMac to SL, since in many respects, I prefer it over Lion anyway, and I won't need to use the iMac for that purpose anymore.
Still, Apple really needs to get to the root of this problem and fix it, ASAP!

Jan 6, 2012 1:34 PM in response to DavePDX07by Ben Friedman1,I don't believe you can revert to SL on a Mini or any Mac that has Lion preinstalled. My understanding is that a switch of the Motherboard would have to take place in order to do that. Snow Leopard can not be installed on a Mac that has Lion preinstalled by the factory. If this is true my advice is not to buy the Mini until the problems with freezing are remedied. OOPS I realize now that you meant the iMac. If it didn't come with Lion preinstalled you are OK.

Jan 7, 2012 6:00 AM in response to Ben Friedman1by Cantellolo,Even if it did come with Lion preinstalled, it is possible to put Snow Leopard on it. My iMac 2011 came with 10.7 preinstalled but it is also compatible with 10.6.6 newer. However, it might be difficult to find a fitting install DVD...

Jan 7, 2012 6:27 AM in response to spigotringby njetherington,Really ? I will try.
(My sitation is similar. Have 20 inc iMac. Loaded Lion. Freezes constantly but mostly with FireFox; not sure how frequently with Safari. Have to reboot with Power Button. Also tried to revert back to SL with a DVD installdisk ; told it can't be done without wiping hard drive ( Uggghly )

Jan 7, 2012 6:31 AM in response to DavePDX07by njetherington,This is IDENTICAL to my problem (see thread further up). Tried to revert to SL from an Install DVD but found its a NOGO. Told by someone in the forum I would have to wipe my hard drive () in order for it too work. I'm not doing that yet but want to know if others think that is the solution.

Jan 7, 2012 6:45 AM in response to DavePDX07by 2rodee,Update: I have partitioned my iMac with Snow Leopard on one side, and Leopard on the other (had to reinstall Leopard after multiple system freezes on SL) Leopard is running flawlessly now for 2 weeks.
How can Apple say it is a "hardware issue" when clearly it isn't?
I'm scared to update my MacBook Pro from Leopard-SL-Lion, for fear of being totally out of business. I've read some laptops work with Lion and some don't. How are we to know?

Jan 7, 2012 7:14 AM in response to 2rodeeby Gandalf The Grey,Personally I think it is a software issue affecting the iMacs mostly that can some how cause hardware failure. Opinion of course, but based off my experience. In my case when I got the some times forced updates via SL I started getting Freezes constantly were I had to shut down the computer several times in an hour, these constant freezes caused my SSD drive to fail, then another SSD then Logics Board etc. I bought this iMac i7 SSD/2 TB HD with 16gig thinking I wouldn't need a upgrade for sometime but boy I was wrong. The good news is Apple and Apple Care gave me in-Store credit and have always taken care of any situation when I have had Apple Care unlike other Warr services I have used. I would however be very very mad if I had a older good working unit and this happened. If they don't get these problems resolved soon I can see a class action lawsuit they are not going to win.
