Jul 28, 2011 10:47 AM in response to rubenlxby Leipe Hacker,It seems like the video driver doesn't clear the video card's ram fully when the computer is going to sleep. When the computer is wakened, the driver assumes the video card ram is empty. When a video (in any form) is played on the computer, the process(es) on the video card assume the ram is empty and it starts reading it. The processor on the card runs into memory that has 'old-before-sleep' instructions and crashes. Then the GPU debugger is started, which is seen in the kernel.log. Of course these are all assumptions. The mouse pointer uses a separate process on the video card, this explains why it's still moving.
Another possibility is that the state of the video card isn't stored properly on sleep ( because of power management issues ) and that when a video is watched this problem is triggered.
In other words, this is clearly a driver issue!

Jul 28, 2011 11:31 AM in response to Leipe Hackerby moebis,Great analysis. We've been complaining about this bug for the last week and NO WORD FROM APPLE. It also turns out that the developers were reporting this bug all throughout the developer previews and Apple ignored this too. Everyone in this thread had to beat the blogs over their heads to even report on this, first was TUAW and now 9to5Mac ...if it takes that long for our watchdogs to shed light on the problem, how long before Apple gets moving on a fix?

Jul 28, 2011 11:52 AM in response to rubenlxby Teddyjohan,Having this exact problem. 2011 iMac with OSX Lion. Zero crashes prior to Lion; Dter upgrade to Lion, multiple. Everything freezes except the mouse cursor. After a while, the screen goes dark and it never comes back again. Requires me to pull the power cord.
No key commands work, the power button doesn't work, nothing. It's just literally dead. And this happens without playing video, but with Safari open.

Jul 28, 2011 11:54 AM in response to Teddyjohanby moebis,You have to hold the power button in for at least 5 seconds, then it will shut down. Wait a second and then press it again for 1-2 seconds to turn it back on. You don't have to "pull the plug"..... I know this isn't a solution, we're all waiting with bated breath for Apple to fix this major issue.

Jul 28, 2011 12:04 PM in response to rubenlxby Intotheblue12,Just bought new Imac 21.5 inch 5 days ago and updated to the new software, and I am having the exact same problem. About 20% of the time I click a video file to play it freezes up the whole computer and the only thing I can do is move around the mouse cursor. Only solution is to do a hard shut down.
This is driving me bonkers, and as a first time MAC user this is not a good intro for my family into the "mac experience".

Jul 28, 2011 12:22 PM in response to rubenlxby MrParis,I think the worst thing is the complete lack of information coming from Apple. You'd think by now they would at least acknowledge the issue, especially if their developers had been reporting the issues for months before release.
I couldn't take the stress of Hard resetting Lion each time the freeze happened so I reluctantly downgraded back to Snow Leopard and am now FreezeFree. I just hope and pray that Apple steps up and lives up to their usual excellent customer service.
Come on Apple we trust in you (for the most).

Jul 28, 2011 12:33 PM in response to rubenlxby mrtavora,Hi,
i'm new to mac. Just got my iMac 21" in July 11 and everything was fine until I upgraded to Lion.
Now I'm having the same exact problem as @rubenix. Whatever is the mac equivalent of Ctrl+Alt+Del does not work and I have to force shut the computer with the power button. I do this at least once a day and I'm not very happy about it.
I can see a lot of people are experiencing the same problem so I just hope Apple will come out with a fix soon.

Jul 28, 2011 12:37 PM in response to MrParisby Chippystick,I lost trust after the final cut pro X fiasco.

Jul 28, 2011 12:40 PM in response to Chippystickby moebis,My thoughts exactly. I watched how they messed up with FCP X and now with Lion, its like they don't care anymore. The biggest selling point of Mac was that it just works. Knowing it's UNIX underpinnings just bolstered my confidence in Apple. What is it with company's as they grow larger? The quality suffers. Apple is turning into Microsoft.... *amazed*

Jul 28, 2011 12:51 PM in response to Marcellekeby moebis,How about releasing 10.7.1 with the video driver buffer fix, and take your sweet time Apple on 10.7.2 fixing everything else. I'm hoping by 10.7.2 Lion will be solid, right now I just need it usable.
