Q: OSX Lion + 2011 iMac 27'' + Video = Freeze

Hello.

Got a brand new 27'' iMac, installed Lion. The machine freezes randomly when starting to play videos, either on Youtube, Quicktime, iTunes.

When it freezes, the mouse still works, but the machine doesn't respond to any command, requiring me to hit the power button and restart the computer.

Searched on kernel.log and system.log, and found no crash/error/message.

Anyone suffering from the same problem? The machine is pretty solid, been running some OpenCL kernels too and they are ok. It's only video decoding (possible on the GPU) that seems to freeze randomly.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7)

    They wont bring it soon to customers, because its went out to developers to prepare for iCloud - which launches in November.

    @moebis

    Wait, Windows 7 is the most stable OS I have ever used. Got it on 3 computers and it NEVER freezes. I WISH Apple were turning into Microsoft...

    I think the worst thing is the complete lack of information coming from Apple.  You'd think by now they would at least acknowledge the issue, especially if their developers had been reporting the issues for months before release.

    Without meaning to sound patronising......are you new to Apple? They never acknowledge any problems. All what will happen is they will slip the fix into the next update, and pretend that nothing ever happened. To a degree, I can kind of understand. As nothing would really be achieved by them posting on here.

    It's just the Apple way. Unfortunately, I forgot this myself and upgraded in the first couple of days, whereas usually I give it a month.

    I have the problem with Lion freezing, as well.  Everything on the screen (including the clock) stops.  All I can do is move the mouse cursor.

    Unlike the other people on this thread, I am using a 2008 iMac (20-inch).

    The freezes are random.  I cannot associate them with any particular activity or application.  My last freeze occured while activating Mission Control.  Only the Finder was open.

    @Celshader

    The Windows kernel is crap, the Windows UI is crap, but their driver support is golden and quick to fix.

    The OS X 10.7 kernel is still solid, the UI is starting to turn to crap (can anyone say bloat) and the driver support is now crap, and slow to fix.

    COME ON APPLE FIX IT.

    I haven't had any more freezes since doing the PRAM reset and uninstalling the old version of Flash and reinstalling the Beta Flash. I didn't uninstall and install Flash in safe mode like Matthieu did, though. Did it in the regular boot up.

    @mattfromnewtown - just wait, it will happen again. I did the same thing, even turned off computer sleep mode. I was ok for 2 days and them bam, back to back the machine starting to freeze again (twice in 3 hours).

    Nah far from new with Apple but they do occassionally surprise us and let us know of their goofs, especially in the patch notes ;-)

    Just hoping, like everyone else on the board, that we do get a patch fairly soon.  Bit like yourself Boosh, knew I should've held back for a month or so.  Just pains me to know there is a new OS that cant run (properly) on one their top spec'd machines.

    Come on Apple......

    I too am experiencing the freezing problem after upgrading to Lion on my one week old Mid 2011 iMac i5 2.7 2 days ago.  My kids have experienced it while using the new Photobooth in fullscreen mode.  The mouse still moves, but there is no apparent way to Force Close the frozen app.  I've had to turn the machine off with the power button twice so far.  The machine has all of its current updates.

    I realize I'm not adding anything new to this thread, but the longer this thread is, perhaps more attention this issue will get...  (Please let me live in this happy little world I live in - I'm not hurting anybody...)

    I'm apparently just another iMac (i7 Core, 4 GB RAM, 27'' display) Lion user terribly annoyed by not being able to use Flash on Safari or Chrome without freezing my computer and having to restart it manually (as the others, the only thing that works is the mouse, but it won't click or do anything but for move around.) For someone that just switched from Windows I'm starting to get very disappointed with all my investment on a brand new Mac that just crashes all the time. It might still be time to get my money back...

    I haven't experienced the problem in days but then again, I haven't pressed the power button to put the iMac to sleep. I only just turn off the display (shift + ctrl + eject). In Energy Saver, my settings are to set the computer to go to sleep after 1 hour and 45 minutes so I'm assuming after a while, it actually does go to sleep.

    But when I start using the computer again, it seems fine and no freeze. Although I do wonder if the computer actually goes to sleep at all when you explicitly turn off the display. It turns on so quickly as if it wasn't sleeping.

    I recommend everyone inform all the Mac and tech websites/blogs. I'm sure a lot of people are experiencing this problem and it should be publicized more often.

    10.7.1 is not comming out it will be emmidaitly 10.7.2

    10.7.1 : fixes the freezing issue + other mallfunctions

    10.7.2 : Prepares for iCloud activation, but does NOT activate iCloud yet

    so the 10.7.2 will be available soon and fixes the issue !!!

    And please stop screwling about a bad release, First release of xp and vista and 7 were not that good aswell.

    if you got the hands on these you'll see they need the mass users to notice all the problems. next to that they need to keep on their deadline while fixing issues during the developers preview which has been for just 4 months, while other OS develops like windows makes it 1 year and a half devolpers preview + delay on the launch date so please give them some credit.

    FYI ...

    I just opened a bug report at http://bugreport.apple.com. They requested more information for further investigation. Threrefore I provided the file that gets produced by the "sysdiagnose" tool.

    The kernel.log file shows some GPU Debug information. Not sure if it related to this bug,
