Q: OSX Lion + 2011 iMac 27'' + Video = Freeze

Hello.

Got a brand new 27'' iMac, installed Lion. The machine freezes randomly when starting to play videos, either on Youtube, Quicktime, iTunes.

When it freezes, the mouse still works, but the machine doesn't respond to any command, requiring me to hit the power button and restart the computer.

Searched on kernel.log and system.log, and found no crash/error/message.

Anyone suffering from the same problem? The machine is pretty solid, been running some OpenCL kernels too and they are ok. It's only video decoding (possible on the GPU) that seems to freeze randomly.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7)

The status of the bug that I reported at bugreport.apple.com with #9856516 was changed as duplicated to #9836811. So it seems that Apple knows about the problem and is working on it. Hopefully...

Can somebody access this bug report or reported it?

    I have the same problem.

    Flash de-installation + PRAM-reset + safe-mode-Reboot did not help.

mattfromnewtown: you might be still in safe-mode (shift-key while rebooting). In this mode you don't have GPU-acceleration. Since it seems to be a GPU bug, it's no wonder you don't have problems. Running in safe-mode is no solution to the problem.

Normal boot up, Angisoft.I don't know why I have no more problems. Here is the exact sequence that solved my problem-

First,PRAM reset. On second beep I held down the shift key. Went into Safe Mode. Restarted computer normally. Uninstalled Flash. Went to Adobe's website-Installed Flash for Lion Beta. That's it! It's been 4 days so far with many times coming out of sleep mode.

Strange - maybe you were just lucky until now. Why should re-installing Flash fix a problem that is not isolated to Flash? Anyway, i wish you luck

Don't know. Now I have another glitch. Nothing terrible but this morning I saw I had 38 emails. Opened the Apple email and there was but 1 email. I opened it and it went to 37 emails. Soon as I deleted it, the count went to 0. Strange...

    mattfromnewtown,

3 hours after trying it and thankfully, no crashes. I did not have the 10.7 beta installed, it was 10.3.

(Though I'm waiting for it to crash......... Taking precasusions.... Using my other mac for critical work...)

Is anyone using chrome or firefox? I have noticed that the console spits out a load of errors ( number dependent on number of tabs open) if expose or spaces is used in snow leopard, and using the equivalent in lion. After 4000 errors mine crashes. Just recieved this high end 27" imac yesterday.

I installed the new Adobe Flash beta and three days later I have not had a single crash with any video. Everyone here, have you updated to the new Flash beta after installing Lion? That seems to work for many! I have a new iMac 27" bought in May.

I'm having same problem, no point in describing it since you all have it as well.

But I would like to note, I called the mighty Apple "support" and I might as well have been talking to my 86 year old grandfather.  After telling him all the specifics about the problem (freezing on videos, youtube, flash, etc.) he said I need to replace the batteries in my track pad.  WHAT!?  Are you kidding me!  I told you that my mouse still moves while its frozen.  Not to mention if my track pad was dying from batteries, why would the video freeze, and I lose all Key board functionality and my dock icons wouldn't magnify while hovering over them, which I already had made clear to him.

Needless to say, he wasn't "aware" of this problem.

So I guess in the meantime I'm stuck sitting here looking at my $2500 investment that won't play videos!!!  That's awesome Apple.  How bout you make your next iPod not play music!  Get over your freaking Flash hatred and realize its what everybody and their mother still uses on the planet!  And I'm rightful to be upset because Lion was released multiple weeks ago, plenty of time to get this $#@# fixed!!!!!!!!

Installed the Beta Flash for Lion...

... And it was a nice few hours without a crash.

Then after waking up, my imac's OS- much like it's namesake in the "Wizard of Oz," turned into a 'Fraidy Cat and CRASHED....

    Sad.

But for a short moment in time... It was joyous, I tell ya, joyous.

    Now it's just plain bad.

... And it runs like a SLUGGISH DOG!!!!...

I had exactly the same problem on my new 27" imac 2011 in Lion so I downgraded back to snow leopard, but the problem Still exists! which means its more likely to be a hardware problem.

Has anyone else had similar problems like this in snow leopard?

I'm having the same problem with my new 27" iMac and Lion. Namely system freezing when trying to play a music video in iTunes or YouTube videos in Safari after waking the Mac from sleep.

The best work around is to prevent the CPU from sleeping via the Energy system preference, seems ok to let the screen and disk 'sleep'. So far, this has worked for me.

Hope that Apple fix this problem soon.

Yes, sycren, I have had the same freezing behavior in SNOW LEOPARD.  My Mac is a 2008 model that came with Leopard.  I installed SL very recently in anticipation of LION.  SL was a disaster.  Constant freezing.  I quickly retreated back to the very stable Leopard, hoping that LION would be stable, as well.  Obviously, it's not.

I suspect this freezing began with a buggy software update Apple delivered during the Snow Leopard era. Probably to do with Radeon graphics drivers.

I'm having the same problem since i downloaded Lion shortly after release.

Had my iMac 21.5" running Snow Leopard since late May and had absolutely no problems with it whatsoever. No freezes, no stalls...absolutely nothing, the performance was superb.

Then i downloaded Lion shortly after release and since then i've had three stalls. All have been following start-up from sleep.

It's not a major issue for me at the moment as i said it has only happened three times, but annoying nevertheless.

Not just iMacs. And not just video. My MacBook with Lion boots up fine, then freezes or pinwheels when I try to interact with it in almost any way. Never crashed in SL for 2 years. My machine is now inoperable.

I'm in the middle of a freeze at the minute on the iMac 21.5", borrowed my wife's macbook to see if I can find a safe way to unfreeze.

I'm running LION that was installed last week.

I was listening to streamed album, display slept, when album was over I clicked onto a different site to watch a video and it has just frozen, the mouse moves around the screen but no responce from the clicks or keyboard, both wireless.

I hoped switching on the macbook and itunes homeshare would wake up the iMac but it hasn't.

Any advice appreciated, on how to:

    1. shut down safely, or
    2. wake up the machine.
