Q: OSX Lion + 2011 iMac 27'' + Video = Freeze

Hello.

Got a brand new 27'' iMac, installed Lion. The machine freezes randomly when starting to play videos, either on Youtube, Quicktime, iTunes.

When it freezes, the mouse still works, but the machine doesn't respond to any command, requiring me to hit the power button and restart the computer.

Searched on kernel.log and system.log, and found no crash/error/message.

Anyone suffering from the same problem? The machine is pretty solid, been running some OpenCL kernels too and they are ok. It's only video decoding (possible on the GPU) that seems to freeze randomly.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7)

    I just used the following just make sure you are logged in to the correct computer.

    $ sudo reboot

    ssh will then disconnect it does take a minute to reboot.

    If you do not know the local ip address of your iMac you can query for the .local address running

    ssh on your network using the following.

    $ dns-sd -B _ssh._tcp .

    I have a 21.5 inch 2011 imac with 27ghz i5 and 8g of ram.  The problem seems to only happen when I'm websites that have flash videos on the page.

    Ditto everyone - brand new iMac 21", worked beautifully for a few weeks before lion install, then random freezes maybe 2-3 per day since.  I haven't even pinpointed the exact cause, though it seems to be after sleeping and during safari browsing.

    Thanks for all your posts - I thought I was going crazy but I guess I'm not alone!

    Hey I am getting the same issue, just thought I would add. Mine seems to be while iTunes is running in the background. Going to try runnning some tests to see whether or not a movie currently playing is causing it. I have noticed the freezing after pausing a movie and coming back to it later, gonna try quitting out of itunes so see if it occurs still when computer goes to sleep. turning computer sleep off helps though.

    same issue with my 21.5 inch i5 iMac 4G RAM western digital Hard drive (probably not relevant). Installed Lion yesterday as I thought I would wait until the bugs had been sorted . Has frozen twice today, once on YouTube and onc watching an embedded video on the BBC website. Looking forward to a solution.

    I have nearly the same issue with my 2009 13" Macbook Pro C2D 2.26 ghz, after upgrading it to Lion. The computer seems to nearly freeze when awakening from sleep - the doesn't awaken right away, though the pulsating sleep light stops and appears solid - about 20% of the time after re-awakening, I have to  give it some time, or plug the macbook into power outlet, and the computer will eventually awake (I haven't noticed a consistent remedy yet - or a consistent time frame). Very annoying. I think the problem is exacerbated when peripherals are plugged in.

    How many of you guys have noticed artifacting in addition to the freezes? Just noticed some video playback flashing green and then my menubar started looking fuzzy.

    No I haveen't seen this but this discussion is specifically about a complete freeze when trying to play embedded videos. By complete freeze is meant that switching off and switching back on is the only way out.

    exact same issue that everyone has described. 27" i7 iMac w/ the upgraded vid card. the machine comepletely freezes when watching some videos. there is no consistency to it, it was often Flash-based video, but i uninstalled Flash completely and it still happens with Quicktime videos i have saved on my hdd.

    this only started after upgrading to Lion. the computer was *rock solid* until i upgraded. and it only happens on the iMac, my 3 yr old Macbook Pro and my 2 yr old Mini have not had the problem. i'm guessing it's a grx card issue?

    Same issue. I have a brand new (July 7th) 21.5" iMac. Since upgrading to Lion I've had freezes due to youtube & vimeo videos, flash videos on web pages and iTunes videos, all after the computer has been brought out of sleep mode.

    Somewhat ironically, the only thing that's never had a problem since upgrading to Lion has been Netflix instant play which uses Microsoft's Silverlight.

    Same issue - I have June 2011 imac - crashes when viewing any wesbite that uses flash or video after machine has been to sleep. Had the mac for 3 weeks before lion and it worked perfectly - now it crashes twice a day.

    It seems alot of people are having this issue, has it finally come to apples attention?

    Are there any apple admins on the forum who have read this and can shed some light on it?

    Even a 'we are aware of the issue - looking into a fix' would be a start. Went to apple store and they said there was not an issue!

    the funny thing: When Lion was released I update my Snow and everything was working nice! Then, I decided make a clean install (I thought it would be better). I erased my disk, install the Lion and all the programs again.. and now my system freezes sometimes in youtube....
