Aug 1, 2011 3:29 AM in response to hellinby kirkmc,I'm not giving Apple a bye, but they're not sleeping. I've been working with an Apple engineer for the past week trying to narrow down the cause of this. While they will not - and never do - come out and say anything about this publically until they find a fix, you can be reassured that they are looking for one.

Aug 1, 2011 3:41 AM in response to cleverson from são pauloby MR DOS,I have a 21.5" iMac bought in June. Clean install of SL followed by Lion and I have the same locking up issue. I have only been a Mac user a few weeks and have been every enthusiastic about the Mac ... until this issue. I've been using Windows based computers professionally and personally everyday for more years that I care to remember and I can't honestly remember the last time I had a "blue screen of death" or even worse, a complete system freeze with no feedback as to what went wrong !
This is a really monumental screw-up on Apple's part. It's very frustrating because :
1. This problem is happening on their brand new line of computers. It's not like it's being reported on 4/5 year old models.
2. This problem happens with clean upgrades from SL to Lion. It doesn't need some esoteric 3rd party piece of software to make the computer lock up.
3. This is a very easy problem to reproduce (i.e. from sleep). How could someone in Apple's QA not have spotted this, you don't exactly have to look very hard to find it. Apple employee's might never sleep but surely their computers do ?
4. The problem seems to be with Apples own offically sanctioned hardware/software i.e. the graphics card/driver. This is not some superflous external piece of hardware that 1% of the Mac population might be using. If my external NAS drive suddenly stopped working I could understand that, but a display driver bug locking up the entire system?
5. This is not some weird, highly unlikely corner-case of a typical user. This is a user watching video. How much more common a use-case can you possibly imagine ?
6. There has been radio silence on Apple's part. The only thing worse than a problem like this from a customers point of view is for the problem not to be acknowledged. Sure Apple may want to wait some time before conifrming the problem until they hear enough to be convinced there is an issue, but how many more people really need to get on these forums and report this issue before it's acknowledged ?
7. "It just works". Ah, no it doesn't.
I can only imagine what the reaction would be if this happened with an M$ OS release (which supports way more graphics cards/drivers than Mac!)
I've only had my Mac a few weeks and have been enjoying it immensely up until Lion. But for the 2nd biggest company on the planet (2nd only to Exxon Mobile) to screw up like this (and not acknowledge it) is very disappointing. I've been banging on about how great Macs are to my work colleagues/friends for weeks and then they heard about this. I've been eating my words since ...

Aug 1, 2011 3:47 AM in response to kirkmcby Celshader,I would have thought at this point they know exactly what is causing the problem, but are too pig-headed to make a release ahead of their schedule, or are waiting to implement it in the next release.
If your telling me they are still trying to figure out what is causing the problem then I really have lost a lot the little faith I had left in Apple.

Aug 1, 2011 3:57 AM in response to Celshaderby kirkmc,As far as I can tell, they don't yet have an answer. I've had a couple of e-mails today from the engineer who I've been working with. FWIW, I'm in France, and I'm in touch with people in Apple's European support center in Cork, Ireland. They then probably go back to engineers in Cupertino with the information they get. I'm guessing that there are people in a number of countries collecting information, so it's to be hoped that a solution is found soon.
I do agree that they should have spotted this in their testing. I'm leaning more toward a hardware problem with a specific series of Macs. If it were a software problem, it's more likely that it would have been discovered. Since these are very recent Macs, perhaps the problem wasn't noticed. If it is a hardware problem, it might be fixable via a software update, especially since everything worked fine under Snow. -
Aug 1, 2011 4:26 AM in response to rubenlxby fringant,The same here...
iMac 27' is three days old... after returning the first iMac with a defecting fan this is just embarrassing.
-
Aug 1, 2011 4:55 AM in response to fringantby hellin,And because it is not for this forum, someone from Apple to tell us what is happening, or give us a solution. I was not expecting this from apple. I'm about to return my new imac.

Aug 1, 2011 4:58 AM in response to kirkmcby Stephen Finlay,Good to hear that they are aware of the problem and are working on a fix. Basically, that's all I need to know at the moment. Just didn't want to think that such a serious issue for so many new iMac owners would be forgotten.
For the time being, I'm getting by with having my energy saving settings set to never have the computer sleep. ( Display and disk can still power down though )

Aug 1, 2011 5:08 AM in response to rubenlxby hellin,We need a solution, you imagine you're working with something important and you suddenly freezes the screen? This is not acceptable. This is a serious error and apple should fix now. People have spent almost 2000 dollars on an iMac and now it does not work, this is a shame and at least we could say that's what happens and when it will solve.

Aug 1, 2011 5:13 AM in response to kelliefrombeavertonby softwater,I can't even click on the Apple to force quit...
Probably somoene has said this already, but I can't read through 30 pages to find out....
use 'OPTION + COMMAND + ESC' to get the Force Quit menu when you can't use the mouse pointer.
