Q: OSX Lion + 2011 iMac 27'' + Video = Freeze

Interesting.  I guess I did that at some point, but it didn't cost anything to do so.  I notice from that link it's still free to register as a developer.

If you can be bothered, I'd sign up and report this to Apple.

I haven't had a freeze or a graphical corruption since I stopped putting my mac to sleep, which is nice and all but I can't imagine this solution is great for my hard drive.

I'm also now having to choose between graphical performance and opening itunes which is eh, dumb. All in all even if you take the bugs out like has not impressed me at all.

I have a macbook pro 15" (October 2010) that was as solid as a rock on SL. The machine is unmodified, no extra memory or any other hardware change. I upgraded to Lion last week and got freezes when I ran Quick time. I then did a clean install of Lion, and got freezes running iTunes (all apple programs). This was not intermittent; any time I ran Quicktime after the upgrade, I got a freeze, any time I ran iTunes after the reinstall, I got the freeze. The mouse continued to work, but nothing else. Eventually, in frustration, I reverted to SL, and it's as stable as ever.

This is the first time in a 25 year career as a programmer that I have had to revert an OS install (Windows, Linux, various Unix flavours etc etc). It's just not good enough. I was expecting more from Apple especially given my experience with SL.

Anyway, i'll wait for a patch before trying again.

The way I use my iMac: I use it in the evening when I come back from work. When I am done, I put it to sleep using the keyboard shortcut so that the harddrives do not spin all night (they will if I do not make the iMac sleep because I have the time machine, so backups will occur). In the morning, I wake it up to get my emails and watch new videos on YouTube (for example). Currently the last step leads to a freeze.

I do not feel that I should change the way I use my computer because of a bug. I certainly hope that they are going to fix this. If not, I am going back to Snow Leopard.

I sent my feedback to the provided links couple pages ago. I suggest we all do the same.

Just thought I'd add myself in here as I have been having this problem often since upgrading to Lion too. Very very bored of it.

I have a Late 2009 iMac (model 11,1) and I am holding off with the Lion upgrade till this issue is resolved. I don't know that it affects my machine, but I do have an ATI Radeon HD 4850 and don't want to take the chance.

As frustrating all this is, the best course of action is to call tech support to create a ticket, and leave Apple feedback through the link above. Having worked in the tech support industry myself, I can attest that the issues that get the fastest resolution are the ones that cause the greatest amount of noise.

Getting frustrated is understandable. Venting here is understandable. Give it some time, the solution will come. In the mean time, use the channels Apple provides (even if you don't like those channels) to make your voice heard. This will get us the results we want.

i was one of the earlier reporters of this problem. The strange thing is that I can no longer make it happen for me since monday. Just now I was playing two embedded videos, an Apple instructional video and a film in iTunes, all at the same time, no freeze. this is also after waking the imac from sleep.

iMac was purchased May 2011 it has an i5 processor 4Gb RAM and AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB graphics. the OS build is Mac OS X Lion 10.7 (11A511) which is the same for everyone I guess

I realise that this does not really help but just adds to the general weirdness of this problem.

I should add that the only things I have done were to repair disk permissions, which verify disk permissions showed to be all incorrect and load Java Runtime. I can't see that the latter would have been related at all.

my iMac 27 mid 2011 to lion.

Did it Today, and so far, no bug.

The point is that I had problem with my iMac regarding sleeping mode.

For time to time, it just won't stay in sleep mode and awake up in seconds.

The workaround to this problemn was to repair permission and to restart my computer and then

there was no problem with the sleep mode.

So when i update to lion, my iMac was ok with sleeping mode.

I update to lion from snow leopard, desinstall Flash Palyer and install the Flas Player beta for lion.

So far no problem, even after waking up.

So I gues the problem with the video is linked to the problem with the sleeping mode.

If i ever have the bug, i will post it here.

I have 27' iMac i5 1§ Go RAM and 1 Go ATI video card

TidBits article was spot on! Thank you! Even though I'm still running SL, I have a standing policy of waiting 6-mths before updating. And when I do, you folks have been really helpful.

Command-Option-esc does not work for me when the freeze occurs.  Have to use the power button.  This can't be good on my SSD.

@NowWhat! - I appreciate both the tone of your response, as well as the article you provided.  I think more of us should follow the lead set by your tone - I think it's more constructive in working toward a solution.

Okay guys... I'm back.

I switched my ATI Radeon HD 4870 in my Mac Pro to my old Nvidia 8800GT.

I still have the same problem. Switching graphic cards did NOT WORK.

So there you have it folks... it's not an ATI issue or an Nvidia issue.

By the way... I did a clean install as well and before I did ANYTHING, I tested some random videos and got the freeze.

So by process of elimination, I know it's not ATI specifically or a problem with my particular software configuration.

Is this affecting all 2011 iMacs that have Lion preinstalled?  If it's a Lion bug, why would it only affect some?
