Q: OSX Lion + 2011 iMac 27'' + Video = Freeze

Hello.

Got a brand new 27'' iMac, installed Lion. The machine freezes randomly when starting to play videos, either on Youtube, Quicktime, iTunes.

When it freezes, the mouse still works, but the machine doesn't respond to any command, requiring me to hit the power button and restart the computer.

Searched on kernel.log and system.log, and found no crash/error/message.

Anyone suffering from the same problem? The machine is pretty solid, been running some OpenCL kernels too and they are ok. It's only video decoding (possible on the GPU) that seems to freeze randomly.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7)

SAME ISSUE. At least I am not the only one. APPLE! PLEASE HELP US!

Running iMac in my office. Lion. Either 4 or 8 gigs RAM, can't remember which. Running just safari and MS WORD and Mail. Perhaps Excel. Nothing too taxing.

JUST AS deborah and steven write:  Two or three times a day, there is a repeated beeping, which seems to come in sets of 3 or 4, and the computer at the same time locks up. Freezes. Nothing can be done. Cursor frozen. Keyboard input stopped. Can only shut down by holding power button down.

Nothing consistent I am doing just before this crash.

    Start up again runs normally.

    ANY IDEAS ANYONE?

TidBITS just published an article from Kirk McElhearn covering his same problems with this freezing issue.

"But a lot of iMac users — and, judging from the Apple forum thread, many of whom are new to Macs — are very angry that this is happening with brand new Macs. As for me, I take it as just another bump in the road. I don’t watch a lot of videos on my iMac, but if I needed to for my work, I would probably be somewhat less stoic.

Finally, if you have a new iMac that’s still running Snow Leopard, and you watch videos of any sort, I recommend holding off on a Lion upgrade until Apple addresses this conflict."

Another new iMac 21.5 with the issue. Just 2 months old and was running good on Leopard. Now with Lion I am beginning to ask should I have changed to Apple at all.

I have been plagued with this problem ONLY since upgrading my mid 2011 iMac to Lion (3.4 GHz, i7, 16 GB, 6970M)

What has worked for me so far is to never let the computer go into sleep mode in the Energy Saver preferences. I watched videos on TouTube and Vimeo all last night with no problems at all. Zip!

Yes, there are some disadvantages for never letting the iMac go into sleep mode, but I can live with that until a fix comes from Apple. I would much rather watch videos and then turn off my Mac for the night than to place the stress on it by having to cold reboot out of a freeze just because I watched one video.

It has worked for me. Maybe it will work for you...just as a work around for now.

@Marcelleke Are you sure? Did you get any notification from Apple? I was hoping that the fix will arrive much earlier as 10.7.2. Especially if we keep in mind that it is a system hang and was reported wait before 10.7 was officially announced.

I self have an iMac 21,5'' from mid MAY2011 and experienced the same issues.

Why isn't this affecting all 2011 iMacs if it's a Lion bug?

I have the trifecta of current problems. I'm in on the recall for the 1 TB defective hard drive and I have video freezing the system requiring a reboot. Added to that a WiFi dropout problem that seems unique to the iMac.

It seems that there is a good problem the video freeze is linked to the defective hard drive. Has anyone out there had the drive replaced and noticed that videos stopped freeing. My videos freeze in the browser and not in iTunes watching a video podcaset or with some services like HBO Go.

I plan to take the machine in for the drive replacement soon and hope that the fix will clear up these issues. There also seems to be a flashing on the screen when I switch between applications. Again it could all be linked to the defective hard drive. The WiFi problem seems like a software/firmware type problem that will probably be fixed with a 10.7.1 update.

    Cheers,

    Ron
