Q: OSX Lion + 2011 iMac 27'' + Video = Freeze

Hello.

Got a brand new 27'' iMac, installed Lion. The machine freezes randomly when starting to play videos, either on Youtube, Quicktime, iTunes.

When it freezes, the mouse still works, but the machine doesn't respond to any command, requiring me to hit the power button and restart the computer.

Searched on kernel.log and system.log, and found no crash/error/message.

Anyone suffering from the same problem? The machine is pretty solid, been running some OpenCL kernels too and they are ok. It's only video decoding (possible on the GPU) that seems to freeze randomly.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7)

I have just started to experience this issue.

My new iMac had been working perfectly until two days ago when the problem arose and the only way to resolve the issue is hard boot, although i have noticed it comes back with all applications open where i had last used them and safari opens on the page that caused the problem, if i select to watch the video again it works.

Come on apple please release a fix as this has now happened 4 times in two days

no freezes since last sunday but this morning it happened again. Perhaps it's a weekend thing for my iMac, going into the Apple store later see if I can make it happen on their stuff

Tried that, but most of the machines still run Snow Leopard. Makes you wonder.

This exact same this is happening to me. Have had my new imac 27-inch, Mid 2011 for about 2 months. Installed Lion and was fine for a week, now 3 days in a row, it freezes up, can still move the mouse around, but it doesn't respond to any clicking, and the only way to make anything happen is to do a hard reboot.

Is Apple going to do anything about this?

Folks, this is what has worked for me as a temporary workaround until a permanant fix comes about:

System Preferences --> Energy saver --> Computer Sleep to "Never"

    Restart the iMac.

Go watch videos on YouTube (or anywhere else) to your hearts content. I have been doing this successfully since Thursday night. I have been plagued with the video freeze problem since I upgraded to Lion the day it was released. Now it's not a problem. I am a happy camper and I have faith that Apple is working on the issue.

The only downside? Your computer will remain running (though you can have your display go to sleep). So I just shut down the computer for the night. Not too big of a deal and saves a few pennies on electricity.

Removing Flash or running Flash BETA does not work. I have tried that. The above is the only thing that has worked for me.

So this happened yesterday when I watched a youtube video while cloning my Harddrive, no sleep involved. I am officially fed up with this crap.

So I went into my local Apple store. A nice row of unattended iMacs, closed Safari on the first one, checked it was running Lion, put it to sleep. Woke it up started Safari, went to the BBC news page and ran a video. It froze first time. then I moved on to the next one and tried the same thing but couldn't get it to freeze. Meantime a 'genius' came to the first machine to demo Lion to a customer. After watching him trying to get something to work for a while I explained what I had done and re-started the machine for him. Probably lost a sale there. So I suggest everyone visits their local Apple store and see how many Macs we can freeze! THAT might attract some attention.

Alright can some one please tell me how to get in on the 10.7.2 beta? It seems I have nothing to lose.

Something that I do consider either. This bug is to serious and the lack of response from Apple is forcing me to look for alternatives. Return to SL or go for the 10.7.2 beta update if that solves this issue.

If I update to the beta how hard would be to get back onto the stable release once 10.7.2 is officialy released to we mortals?
