Q: OSX Lion + 2011 iMac 27'' + Video = Freeze

Hello.

Got a brand new 27'' iMac, installed Lion. The machine freezes randomly when starting to play videos, either on Youtube, Quicktime, iTunes.

When it freezes, the mouse still works, but the machine doesn't respond to any command, requiring me to hit the power button and restart the computer.

Searched on kernel.log and system.log, and found no crash/error/message.

Anyone suffering from the same problem? The machine is pretty solid, been running some OpenCL kernels too and they are ok. It's only video decoding (possible on the GPU) that seems to freeze randomly.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7)

Another one to add to list...

Just bought a 21.5" 2.7GHz iMac this week, had this issue always sleep/video related. Even had two crashes using Lightroom 3.

just adding myself to the list of affected.... latest Lion + latest 27" iMac... freezes, mouse can move but not click, also occasionally still plays the audio from the video while frozen.... happens with both flash and h.264/quicktime but only in a browser/plug-in not with standalone QuickTime... happened in both Safari and Chrome... coming back from sleep seems likely, it usually works after i hard restart so that'd explain why it just ends up freezing again later

Brand new 27" iMac with Lion preinstalled. Mine will not wake from sleep requireing a hard reboot. It also kernel panics when I try to boot from a Snow Leopard install DVD. Great, cant install Snow Leopard and the machine cannot go to sleep if I want to use it.

I'm not getting any freezing or artefact issues on my 2011 iMac with 10.7.2 developer.

Add me to the list.  Brand new 21" iMac, 2.5GHz, upgraded to Lion the day I bought it.  Locks up almost immediately playing video of any formet after waking from sleep (even the "welcome" video inside Aperture locks it up).  Black screens about once a day.  Nearly all the problems involve waking from sleep.  Avering about 3 hard resets a day.  Probably going to downgrade to Snow Leopard - Lion just isn't ready.

Add me to the list as well.  I bought the new iMac (21.5", i5) back in June and had no problem with Snow Leopard.  I upgraded to Lion on July 30th and immediately started having the lock up problem when playing YoutTube (and other) videos and crashing after waking up from sleep.  After a week of these issues I had enough and downgraded to Snow Leopard.  I liked Lion but the lock ups are unacceptable.  I actually switched from a Windows PC because Lion sounded so nice.  I hate to say it but I NEVER had this much issue with Windows XP.  Don't get me wrong I love my iMac but I am very disappointed that OS X Lion is not a better experience then Windows XP.

27 inch imac, Lion preinstalled - Second Day owning it - freezes on wake up although mouse is responsive. I can use keyborard to wake it up, but no more.

The power button does not respond either - only option is to pull out the power card

Here's something new. It's complicated; but I'll pass it along for what it's worth. BTW, I'm running Lion on a new iMac.

I was working in Final Cut Pro X and exporting a movie to QuickTime. After the encoding finished, Final Cut opened QuickTime so that I could view the completed output. That was expected. I then was able to play the movie in QuickTime. After a few minutes, I paused the movie. When I tried to restart the movie, it wouldn't restart.

My cursor worked; so I tried closing the QT window with the red button. That didn't work. I tried closing QuickTime from the toolbar; but the dropdown didn't work. Because Final Cut was still running behind the QuickTime window, I click on the part of the Final Cut that was still visible and that brought Final Cut into focus. I then closed Final Cut from the toolbar and that dropdown worked correctly.

After Final Cut closed, I was again able to play the QuickTime movie that was now in focus. I did not have to reboot the computer. I noticed that, when it froze, QuickTime created another black rectangle behind the original window. This rectangle was the same size as the QT window but didn't have any controls. It was just a black rectangle offset slightly to the right of the QT window. Surprisingly, when I clicked the edge of the black rectangle, it came into focus covering up most of the QT window.

While the movie was playing again, I decided to pause it again. Then the same frezing problem occured. The same black rectangle behind the QT window with the frozen movie. No response from any of the controls although I could still click on the black rectangle to be bring it in and out of focus. Until the rectangle suddenly disappeared and I was stuck with a non-working QT window and a responsive cursor.

So I tried an Option-Command-Escape. That brought up the Force Quit dialog. I forced QT closed. Then, I reopened the QT movie and it played. I've noticed that QT still freezes on occasion and it doesn't always act the same way twice. But the black rectangles are interesting. They don't always appear. I just noticed that, when one does appear and I close the first QT window, I can click on the rectangle and it will show controls just like the regular QT window although no video.

I have notice, if there's another window open like Final Cut or Finder and it is visible, I can click on it to bring it into focus and then click QT and it will play.

Any ideas on what causes the black rectangles or why bring QT in and out of focus allows it to play?

Same for me. freezing occurs, cursur moves, restart required, while using video on safari and firefox; after waking from sleep mode, also logging on to different user.  21.5" mid-2011 imac. upgraded to lion. no problems with snow leopard.

Adding to the list.  Mid 2011 21.5" iMac i7, coming out of sleep mode and even some times just surfing the internet the whole screen freezes up but music will keep playing.  My cursor works and everything but I can't click on anything or open the task manager.  Happened just after downloading lion from the app store.  Hopefully they come out with a patch soon, I'm a first time mac user and this is not a good introduction

    Dear Apple,

It's now Monday. People use your machines to make a living. If they don't work, they don't make money. And they start to get more than a little upset. You're Apple, not Microsoft, so you get the benefit of the doubt. For a couple of days. But it's been more than a couple You have approximately 24 hours before this discussion, which happens to have been viewed by over 40,000 people, becomes a mainstream story. It's feeling like Vista, and it would be an ideal follow-up for David Pogue to redeem himself for his early praise of Final Cut Pro X. Your users deserve a fix, today. Get it done. Your credibility is on the line.

Same problem here.. brand new 27' iMac with all bells and whistles, freezes almost everytime I try to play a H264 video. Restart required. Also noticed  green screen flickering when playing youtube videos full screen in 1081 and sometimes windows are redrawn badly with grey noise. Must be a video card problem.
