Q: OSX Lion + 2011 iMac 27'' + Video = Freeze

Hello.

Got a brand new 27'' iMac, installed Lion. The machine freezes randomly when starting to play videos, either on Youtube, Quicktime, iTunes.

When it freezes, the mouse still works, but the machine doesn't respond to any command, requiring me to hit the power button and restart the computer.

Searched on kernel.log and system.log, and found no crash/error/message.

Anyone suffering from the same problem? The machine is pretty solid, been running some OpenCL kernels too and they are ok. It's only video decoding (possible on the GPU) that seems to freeze randomly.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7)

I would recommend reading section 7 of the terms and conditions applicable to the use of Lion which can be found here:

    http://images.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/macosx107.pdf

section 7 D is particularly relevant

APPLE DOES NOT WARRANT AGAINST INTERFERENCE WITH YOUR ENJOYMENT OF THE APPLESOFTWARE AND SERVICES, THAT THE FUNCTIONS CONTAINED IN, OR SERVICES PERFORMED ORPROVIDED BY, THE APPLE SOFTWARE WILL MEET YOUR REQUIREMENTS, THAT THE OPERATION OF

THE APPLE SOFTWARE OR SERVICES WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED OR ERROR-FREE, THAT ANYSERVICES WILL CONTINUE TO BE MADE AVAILABLE, THAT THE APPLE SOFTWARE OR SERVICESWILL BE COMPATIBLE OR WORK WITH ANY THIRD PARTY SOFTWARE, APPLICATIONS OR THIRDPARTY SERVICES, OR THAT DEFECTS IN THE APPLE SOFTWARE OR SERVICES WILL BECORRECTED. INSTALLATION OF THIS SOFTWARE MAY AFFECT THE USABILITY OF THIRD PARTYSOFTWARE, APPLICATIONS OR THIRD PARTY SERVICES.

All software suppliers use  a similar wording and I assume that everyone here will have accepted the T&C otherwise they would not be using Lion at all.

    Here's what I know for a fact:

    1. It's not just iMacs affected. I have a Mac Pro with the same problems.

    2. It's not just ATI cards. I tried both ATI and Nvidia cards in my machine and it still freezes.

    3. A fresh install on a brand new hard drive did not work for me. I didn't have any third party apps installed. Everything was default.

    4. It's not just when you sleep the system. I have my computer set to never sleep and I still have the freezing issues.

    5. I booted into my Snow Leopard drive and everything worked as expected. Played a bunch of videos and no freezing.

    6. The freezing occurs with flash, without flash and with any QuickTime or iTunes video.

These are all facts based on what I tried with my machine. I don't have an iMac, so don't tell me that setting it to never sleep solves the issue because for me, it doesn't.

10.7.1 will not be released, they are going straight to 10.7.2

They will not release 10.7.2 until they are ready to launch their iCloud service, as this is the main feature upgrade in that release.

For people who have upgraded to the developer preview, and it has fixed the issue, I am a little confused, as people who have been in contact with Apple say that they have not figured out the problem...

So how can it be fixed when they don't know what is causing it?

OS X Lion is just a few days old and Apple is already working on a point release. The Cupertino-based company seeded to developers OS X 10.7.2 Lion for testing, skipping 10.7.1. According to BGR, this is a release that can be found within the iCloud section of the developers portal as Apple asks developers to test iCloud with OS X Lion.

We’ve just received a tip that OS X Lion 10.7.2, a combo update, is available for Mac developers in Apple’s developer site. While the OS isn’t available on the regular Mac portal, it’s available as a direct link within the iCloud for Lion beta section.

Add me to the ever growing list. Brand new iMac i5 with lion pre-installed. Just been on the phone to apple support who have never had this problem reported before............. Yeah right. I am new to apple but as soon as my apple store is open in the morning I am going to take this piece of junk back and revert to windows. At least I will save a grand even if it is flaky.

One more here.  i7 21.5 2011 iMac.  Freezes in iTunes, iPhoto, with Flash vids in Safari and Chrome.

Hopefully these hard resets aren't damaging my new Mac.

    When's the update coming?

How do you get out of having every single reply emailed to you? I went to preferences and clicked no on all of the selections but no dice. Still getting every single email notification. Need to start a thread for that...

As for the freezing up, I have given all the info on how to fix it, but apparently "NO ONE" reads back much. As we are still getting 20-30 emails a day with people still complaining.

Same here. i7 2011 iMac. Freezes when playing any types of videos at random times.

A very good point of the poster above - Having to hard reset my Mac about 30 times since Purchasing it, SURELY this cannot be good and could be causing data corruption.... not happy.

Raised a case with Apple Support - They say they haven't heard of it before. Sent me some stupid link to Mac 101 (ie - Basically how to turn on your mac and how to transfer your stuff from a windows machine)

I've had a mac for 5 years - that level of tech support for Applecare is apalling, I'm shocked. Certainly not a good way to spend money for a lack of support.

Also they instantly closed the case, even after I asked to leave it open until I can confirm the issue had been resolved or not.

I'll be raising a case tomorrow and will hilight the complete lack of support - and will yet again point them to this forum thread - which they seem to ignore!

Having the same issue with the mail from this forum. But I love the conversations in Mail for Lion, all the email is not messing up my mailbox.  ;-)

I hope that Apple comes with a fix soon and I' m a little bit frustrated about it since OSX is normaly a lovely and extremely stable OS. I don't like the lack of response on this issue from Apple but I don't also agree with lots of people saying to bring their Mac back or taking some other actions. Yes it is frustrating, but it can happen with every Operating system. I can remember that Microsoft had a similar difficult issue with the release of Vista.

But it looks like Apple doesn't realize that it is better to communicate about it to the customer. Even "we are working on it"  would be great.

Hi!!! I see you made it here. As you can see these iMac users have the same problems waking from sleep and playing a video. Have you tried your customer's iMac yet? I went to the Apple Store in my area and put an iMac to sleep and woke it and it had the same problem but the irritating thing is the way the employees shrugged it off! Before I install Lion on my brand new iMacs (if at all) I will wait for several updates. There are too many conflicts in Lion vs.Hardware and some software for me to take on this wild beast.

Ranting here about legal action and returning your new Mac isn't really likely to change anything.  Posting "me too" messages here isn't likely to get any result, either.  Try https://www.apple.com/feedback/  or https://www.apple.com/support/  or go to your local Apple Store.  If the low-level person you talk to hasn't heard of the problem or only wants you to follow a script, don't be surprised.  It doesn't mean Apple (which is a company, not a person or a hive mind) hasn't registered the problem somewhere.  Help us all out by going to feedback or support and making a helpful complete bug report.

The reality of the matter is that it takes time to find out what's causing a bug. Sometimes similar symptoms have multiple causes. It takes time to fix a bug especially when two companies might be involved. It takes even more time to regression test the fix against all the possible hardware out there to insure that the fix doesn't break something else.  Finally, it takes time to release a fix.  Several decades in the software business have taught me that bugs happen in the best organizations and that this stuff is hard.

I got rid of my PC a few weeks ago to buy an iMac.  My PC suffered from random crashes that wiped out whatever I was working on when they happened.  I'm disappointed that the Lion "upgrade" broke video playback.  On the other hand, I can at least avoid the crashes by not playing videos and if I have a crash my work is recovered thanks to Lion.  No, I'm not happy, but I'm not tearing my remaining hair our like I was over the mysterious and random PC crashes.  I'm still pretty impressed with the Mac and have no reason to think that a fix isn't coming.

I registered my problem with Apple support last Saturday, 30th July, and spoke to one guy to no avail, and they will call me back tomorrow. Hope the support calls will be feeding back to the hive mind and the fixer bees are on it.

On the plus side, I know the sensible thing would be to revert to SL but there are already just too many things in Lion that I would miss,e.g. the double tap zoom, the gesture navigation stuff, the mail conversation set-up.

Also, at the risk of sounding dippy, the iMac is also the coolest looking machine ever.

It's unsustainable to keep the 'never sleep' setting but I can live with that if it is very short term.
