Q: OSX Lion + 2011 iMac 27'' + Video = Freeze

Hello.

Got a brand new 27'' iMac, installed Lion. The machine freezes randomly when starting to play videos, either on Youtube, Quicktime, iTunes.

When it freezes, the mouse still works, but the machine doesn't respond to any command, requiring me to hit the power button and restart the computer.

Searched on kernel.log and system.log, and found no crash/error/message.

Anyone suffering from the same problem? The machine is pretty solid, been running some OpenCL kernels too and they are ok. It's only video decoding (possible on the GPU) that seems to freeze randomly.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7)

I have for now resolved the screen freeze issue with my iMac.  I have set both the computer and the screen  to never sleep.  After a restart, everything seems to be fine.  Screen saver kicks in regularly with no issues.  Now going on 5 days with no screen freeze at all.  I am not sure if this work around simply applies to the video card and driver software for my computer (Radeon 5750) or if it applicable to newer iMacs.

I too have the issue that updating preferences has no effect on email notifications from the support communities.

If they already fixed this in 10.7.2, why can't they just release a partial update to fix this stupid freezing issue?

I can wait for iCloud, but not for the ability to play videos after my computer sleeps.

I'm using a 1-month-old 21" iMac and upgraded to LION and am having the same problem.  Don't recognize that it's only after the computer has been asleep...but it does happen frequently while attempting to watch YouTube. Just add me to the list of frustrated users.

I continue to follow along, interested in seeing how many there are of us out there with this bug.  Does anyone know of someone with a mid 2011 iMac running Lion that is NOT experiencing this freeze?  Still hoping for a fix or at least an acknowledgement from Apple.  The lack of coverage on the major Apple sites is also a little suprising as well.

Is everyone shutting down their macs at night or just letting the screen sleep?

    Same issue here

I turned on the option under System perference>Energy saver>Restart automatically if the computer freezes

Any how it make me less frustrated..

Hopefully Apple will release an update to fix this bug.

Same problem here.  Here's my nightmare story: Just bought an iMac 27 i7 less than two weeks ago and upgraded it to Lion about a week ago.  Immediately started having the freezing problem with playing video.  Strangely, it has also frozen while scrolling through iPhoto images and I've also had the video artifacts issue (blocks of black and green showing up while videos play and screen information overlaying itself while scrolling through long windows, in addition to the top menu bar looking fuzzy with lines through it).  I took it to Apple tonight.  Their initial "solution" was to reinstall Flash and Silverlight (I didn't have Silverlight installed at all!).  When they went to the Flash download page they saw something from Adobe about issues with Lion, and that they're working on it.  So basically they told me there is currently no solution to this problem for Lion and recommended I downgrade to Snow Leopard until this issue is fixed.  I made them install SL on the spot, but they did it on top of Lion.  I had a weird password reset issue with that and then some Lion "remnants" seemed to linger (such as the invisible Library folder).  Surprisingly, my iPhoto and iTunes libraries were still intact, but I lost all my mail from the Mail app.  Well, actually the files are there, but they couldn't figure out how to get it back in the Mail app, so I had to leave the machine with them at the store.  The "Genius" was honestly fumbling around in the dark to figure things out. It didn't leave me with a good feeling.  So now I wait and figure out if I want to return it for a refund and buy another one in 6 months when they have their s**t figured out, or go with the downgraded SL situation, or make them reimage the machine with SL so I don't have the downgrade issues in the equation.  Anyone's thoughts are welcome!

    I have the same problems.

I also have issues with graphical corruption when certain video content is played.

Just snapped some images after it happened once again. See below.

Looks to me like it's a problem with graphics drivers, as nothing like this happens when I boot into Windows. hopefully Apple's sorting out a fix, pronto.

I agree. There are numerous graphic corruption artifacts in several instances when using video, for example when iCal reminders appear on screen their contour is broken.

    Well

applying the new beta Flash and resetting Safari may work for some people but not for me, I'm afraid. I think that there may be more than one issue here which appear to most people as one thing, that is videos freezing, for example i have only ever had embedded videos freezing, I have had no  problems with quicktime iTunes VLC. Ther have been days when no freezing occurred and days when the first video I clicked on froze.. It was the same when i visted the Apple store. I froze the first iMac almost imediately but the next one I could not freeze at all.
