Q: Lion - Horrible MacBook Pro Battery Life

After upgrading to Lion, my MacBook Pro battery life has been severly affected. After 1.5 hours of light web browsing, my battery has decreased to 40% from 100% after charging all night.

 

Notes: Spotlight completed indexing the hard drive over night, and the laptop remained plugged in charging. The fans seem to be running normally, not at a higher rate. The backlight is at 50% brightness.

 

Thoughts?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7), 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB Ram

    Hey there,

     

    I'm new to the Mac world too, and I've just received my first 17" MBP late 2011 3 days ago. I have to admit that the battery life really drains out very quickly. At first I thought it was because of my added specs (7200 RPM 750 GBHD), but by the looks of it I'm not alone I guess.

     

    Anybody care to point out when do you think this issue will be resolved?

    Just bought a MacBook Air, and must admit (as this thread indicates) that battery life - *****. It holds battery approx 3 hours.

     

    This is a brand new Air with Lion, nothing fancy installed that could drain the battery, but apparently when you buy an Air with lion, you have to be close to an alternative power source.

     

    Very close to returning it to the store (just had it for 7 days). A shame that that apple is not taking this seriously.

    How long does your battery last in Lion just browsing via Airport and having Mail.app opened?

    I rarely spend 7 hours browsing but I use my Mac to remotely access different servers all day long, I get 4 to 5 hours consistently, my battery is a year old (reports as 84% health) and has 212 cycles on it.

    I just bought my brand new Late 2011 2.4 Core i7 15" Macbook Pro with a 256 GB SSD.  Why in the world does it say 2:35 when it's at 99% and I'm just browsing the web and sending e-mails?!  My 4 year old Macbook Pro got better battery life than this!  This is insane!

     

    I kept reading about people having to re-install a fresh copy of snow leopard and then re-upgrade to Lion, but this computer came fresh from the factory with Lion, so what in the world is my solution?  This is depressing.  Any thoughts?

    there is no solution. my advise: take it back and demand a full refund. Maybe if Apple sees an influx of returnerned hardware they'll start to take their software problem a little more seriously.

    You have two main solutions:

     

    1) Return it and research hi-end Windows Machines and take your choice / gamble.

     

    2) Stick with it and hope Apple fix the issue - they are contacting many people about it which is re-assuring.

     

    Neither are perfect.

    I'm having the same issue on my 2010 MacBook Air.

     

    4 hours is the maximum time I can get since I updated to Lion, with Snow Leopard, I could easily get 6 hours.

     

    Please Apple, fix this as soon as possible.

    So after I calmed down a little and put my rational head back on, Here are the steps I am taking to make sure I was not imagining the change in performance.

     

    1) Repair Permissions and Drive - I couldn't do step 2 without this  - Lion the gift that keeps on giving.

    2) Carve out  2x30Gb Paritions from my 320Gb HD.

    3) Install clean Lion download from utility partition. onto first 30Gb Partition.  Apply all OS Updates, install gfxStatus v2.1 and Firefox 8.0.

    4) Install Clean SL from DVD onto second 30Gb Partition. Apply all OS Updates, install gfxStatus v2.1 and Firefox 8.0.

     

    Next Steps:

     

    5) Boot Lion, run 2Hr test and verify drain

    6) Recharge Battery

    7) Boot Snow Leopard run 2Hr test and measure drain.

     

    I'll let you know results after the test.

     

    Possible further steps: standby test for both OS.

    Keep in mind that many have reported that SnowLeopard 10.6.8 already incorporates the battery issues.

    Maybe try 10.6.7 first.

    Good Catch!  I'll download the 10.6.7 and 10.6.8 combos and make a 3rd test.
