Q: Lion - Horrible MacBook Pro Battery Life

After upgrading to Lion, my MacBook Pro battery life has been severly affected. After 1.5 hours of light web browsing, my battery has decreased to 40% from 100% after charging all night.

Notes: Spotlight completed indexing the hard drive over night, and the laptop remained plugged in charging. The fans seem to be running normally, not at a higher rate. The backlight is at 50% brightness.

Thoughts?

I think the person who wrote this blog mixed a couple of things up:

The Second Law of Thermodynamics by Rudolf Clausius

    and

    Newton's Second Law

Hmmm, too many second laws, although the work of Clausius and Clerk Maxwell clearly owe a lot to Newton's research ("The shoulders I stood on" according to Einstein) Clausius get's the credit on this one.

However that does not change the result should you reduce the fan speed to less than that needed to cool the Mac.

I just switched from a  windows 7 laptop to a 13" MBP late 2011, which came with Lion. When i dont scroll or switch between pages the battery lvl indicator shows around 6 hours, when i do scroll or switch between programs the baterry time drops drastically, this is anoying, where is the promissed 7 hour battery life? I calibrated the battery, and did an SMC reset already.Maybe Lion graphical interface its too power hungry..thinking of switching to SN..maybe that helps? Maybe i should do more tests to be certain of Lions power hunger.

Not a too happy apple product owner..yet..

Thanks that solved my problem.  Now battery life using lion is actually slightly better than SL.

Also do you use a Belkin router? The software for the router seems to be the "USB PRINTER AND STORAGE CENTER" causing all the issues.

    Hello

I just downloaded Lion a couple of weeks ago. I have had my MBP about a year and have gotten superb battery performance. IS IT POSSIBLE that I have PAID to upgrade the OS and now I have ONE THIRD the battery life that I had previously?

You mentioned that you were calling Apple about this. How did it go?

    Thanx!

If you downgrade to SL and aren't using Lion at all, I'd ask for a refund.

It is impossible to start talking percentages as Lion has been downloaded over 6 million times and then add all new machines sold with Lion on them, compared to people voicing their issues in a Troubleshooting Forum and it gets thrown out of perspective. But that is not saying there is no issue. Just some have and most don't. No doubt if a fix is coming it will be in a future update which will be released when ready. No good Apple updating a system if it's not yet ready to address any and all the issues that they may need to address.

    Good Luck

It's false logic to write with certainty, when commenting on the battery life issue, that "some have [an issue] and most don't."

You have no more basis to make that claim than do those who claim that the problem of battery life and overheating is epidemic.  You only assume that these forums are not representative of the majority, because all six million or whatever don't post.  That's ridiculous logic.  We all read many forums on many websites without posting.  It doesn't mean we aren't concerned with the topics being discussed or affected by them.

My Apple-certified Mac dealer -- whom I trust a **** of a lot more than Apple's PR machine -- told me when I brought in my Air with the burnt-up logic board that they were hearing about problems with Lion from many, many of their clients.  In fact, they had had some of the same problems themselves with demo machines and the like.

In its App Store descripton of Lion, Apple claims Lion is user-rated at "4+."  But the stars actually show "3+," which is just better than mediocre.  It's been stuck there for months.  Apple OSs of the past didn't get 3s, they got 4s and 5s consistently, especially as they improved with time.

I'm willing to wager that a large percentage of users, perhaps even a majority, is unhappy with Lion.  Had Steve not passed, the widespread customer experience of Lion as inferior might have become scandalous.

Now Apple gets a second chance to get it right, albeit at the price of its co-founder and leader's presence.  They sure better.

If you downgrade to SL and aren't using Lion at all, I'd ask for a refund.

Why do you use the word "downgrade"?

If SL performs better than Lion, at least in that user's and many other users' experience, isn't reinstalling SL at least a "restoration"?  In those users' experience, Lion is the "downgrade."

Why Apple would mass market a downgrade (an iOS-like Mac OS) has been discussed at length on other Apple forums.  It has also been the source of a great deal of criticism regarding Apple's future intentions, how much it want to keep its customers on a leash vs. honoring their service requirements.

BTW, if you haven't tried to reinstall SL after having installed Lion, and spent at least one and possibly two days cutting away the necrosis, then redoing all your directory and file structures -- a process neither fun nor trivial -- you can't appreciate how bad Lion must feel to many Mac users, to provoke such actions.  And how relieved they must be to have rock-steady SL back again.

Hey creep, cut the baby talk (unless that's you go around in life).  I'm a 30-year Apple veteran, not a child.

You have no basis for your claim.  I don't see all those plaudits for Lion that would support it.

Frankly, the available evidence is on my side, Pollyanna.

    Holy ****

Someone shut this post thread down before the ego's break out in another 10 page rant!

There is a problem, "some" users are experiencing it.  It has been documented in this thread quite comprehensively now.  Who cares if it is all or just 1%  when your install base is as large as Apples, it's still a significant number of systems impacted!

I would like to work to find a cause / workable solution but not this constant bickering.

    I'm done here!
