Q: Lion - Horrible MacBook Pro Battery Life

After upgrading to Lion, my MacBook Pro battery life has been severly affected. After 1.5 hours of light web browsing, my battery has decreased to 40% from 100% after charging all night.

Notes: Spotlight completed indexing the hard drive over night, and the laptop remained plugged in charging. The fans seem to be running normally, not at a higher rate. The backlight is at 50% brightness.

Thoughts?

How about everyone stops  ******** about numbers, get the problem SOLVED.

That would be nice but ....

Analysing this problem is aided by an accurate view of the number of affected users, posting that "most" users are affected is detrimental, as is posting that no users are affected. This thread has had some preposterous claims made, thus obscuring the actual scale of the issue.

Statistical analysis is more accurate given a larger sample ("most") but data collection from a million plus machines is an overwhelming task, resources that would be better used if better focused.

Seems many are forgetting Rule #1 for online forums: Don't feed the Trolls.  Trolls hate a vaccum. Give them one and they go away.

Sadly, Chip, you're talking about thugs, not jus trolls, whom I suspect are hoping for a reward for their efforts to derail this conversation.  You're right to say ignore their bullying while we wait for Apple's moderators to intervene.  Why haven't they already?  Draw your own conclusions.

If a solution or solutions emerge, great.  If not, at least people encountering these issues for the first time know that they're not alone and that there are enough people expressing their disappointment that an official solution might eventually appear.  I hear from my tech grapevine that the problems described in this and other forums are definitely widespread.  Hang in there.

Absolutely 100% correct Bob and couldn't agree more with everything you have said (except there are no Apple Moderators here) thank you for putting things back on track. You truely are an excellent poster with great insight.

    Thank you

Actually, you reminded me of something else Apple engineering agreed with. The higher battery drain, from "things" running on the machine do NOT show up in Activity monitor nor anywhere else (except their deep diagnostic tool they sent me). They agreed it would be nice if it showed up somewhere for people like us!

Then use activity monitor to isolate high cycle useage, that way a pattern may emerge, all we have here is histrionic posts that most Lion users are suffering with this, and they clearly are not.

Do you mind me asking what this "deep diagnostic tool" is called?

    I'm sorry Franc, I don't believe you.

It doesn't have a name. Sent as a DMG and creates ACCD dmg files that I forwarded to Apple.

Csound1. If it showed up why are most with this problem showing no activity on the CPU? Huh? Probably becuase it isn't CPU intensive but this "new" stuff with the GPU is maybe doing something to drain the battery (switching). Even if it's not correct, it's the truth! I have zero reason to lie!

However, the fact GFXcardstatus forces the graphics card to not switch and stay integrated say, which results in higher battery life (and with no effect on CPU stats from activity monitor either way). My conversation with Apple, which they concurred with was that if something can impact battery life so much, we should be able to see it, or optionally perhaps turn it off. Aka GFXcardstatus - who I understand Apple has now hired.

I believe it's slowly moving in the right direction.

Csound1, you are funny. Mummy not given you your weetabix this morning

I meant, it doesn't have a meaningful name other than "Catpure Data" which is what I said it does. They sent me a DMG to mount which when mounted loads a program that says it's Capturung Data. Oh, and FWIW - in the name is also says 9.1.d DMG

The .dmg file (disk image) is a container and when mounted should have the "program" (Unix tool or command?) you've mentioned in it.  This program should have a name - that's what I'm after.

And about the output - do you have an idea what ACCD stands for?  Can't find something meaningful (to me).

Maybe I'm missing something, but doesn't this imply that installing GFXcardstatus would fix the problem?

I am sure that you have spent much time with your flying cows, that you give them names does not surprise me.

GFXcardstatus helps a lot but it has bugs. The Seed "update" I was sent from Apple helped a little more and removing some old demon programs helps a little more again.

We are not there yet but as I keep saying, Apple continue to work on it and it's getting better.

Redarm; I looked at the package and the unix program is called Capture Data. The ACCD most likely stands for something like Apple Capture ? Data. I looked at the data it captures and there's about 100+ detailed bullets under such as ; File System Usage; Packet traces; Time Machine; Mail;Bluetooth;crash reports; logs;nidump;io reg (gets kit registry info);kextstatl;drutil; and much much more..
