Q: Lion - Horrible MacBook Pro Battery Life

After upgrading to Lion, my MacBook Pro battery life has been severly affected. After 1.5 hours of light web browsing, my battery has decreased to 40% from 100% after charging all night.

Notes: Spotlight completed indexing the hard drive over night, and the laptop remained plugged in charging. The fans seem to be running normally, not at a higher rate. The backlight is at 50% brightness.

Thoughts?

    i think it's good life, i have mbp 13" late 2011 only 2 week's 8 cycles and 5 hours of real life

if i start only read pages maybe i can get 6 hours, read very slow and no flash,no music, only safari and web page , and if i start scroll the page it's drop from 7 to 5:30, and again if i start write or read it's jump to 6 or 7

anyway you have core2Duo i think, so for this processor it's take twice time same task then for i5 or i7

Thanks, I appreciate the suggestions. I have since found an easy way to go back to SL and am doing it as we speak. I have also written a few complaints to apple/ iTunes about the Lion software and have received a refund as well as a few song credits for my troubles which I think is very considerate of the.  It's clear that they aren't acknowledging this problem whatsoever and I'm just happy that I got my money back and will think twice before I upgrade again. If its not broken, don't fix it right :)

I noticed Lion being a problem right away so I emailed them within 3 days and continued to reply with questions about Lion and they just kept crediting my iTunes account. It's not much but its something. BTW, this is the only thing I have found that worked for me. Posted by Kappy in another discussion : Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard

    1.  Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.

    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.

    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.

    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.

This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.

If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

Remember: This model has been advertised for 10 hours (that's why I didn't choose off the 15" one) and I have SSD. Thus I can't be happy with 4 hours... With an HD and 5 -5.5 hours it would be ok. One thing I regret, is not to have tested SL with the SSD; I instaled Lion & SSD the same time.

But wait.. What I still can do, is put back my HD and test it for one -two days with SL. This would very accurate. I'll keep you updated!

No I was speaking about mine. Funnily enough, I find quite satisfactory your 5 -5.5 hours, for such a powerful machine (compared to mine). I read your posts in macrumors. I found similar things like your scrolling problem & ubnormal big comsumption while surfing.

(*) These were my results after some more tests I run a month+ ago: https://discussions.apple.com/message/17120731#17120731

this test i made in restored lion from time machine, but when i made a clean install, power consume of mAh not jump so high it's maximum 1100mA per hour and medium maybe 850mA (5600/850=6,6hours)

so maybe on clean install i can get about 6:30 hours of very light surf(no flash)

but anyway even on clean install when i start scroll or reload page it's drop to 5:40-5:50 so not a big diffrence

    Disclaimer - I don't know any more about release dates than the rest of you but I do know, some of the seed updates helped me and likely to be in the later builds;

From past history, it won't be "long" - (long be a non-descriptive word)...

    Fingers crossed!!!!

Can anyone tell me if its harming my computer in anyway to keep running these updates and restores? In the last 4 days I have installed lion, tried to restore my computer a hand full of times which involved restarting it a number of times within a short period of time and them finally finding a restore that works and now restoring it once more from time machine. I'm afraid all this work is bad for my hard drive. I regret ever installing lion. I just wanted iCloud.

Had the battery and charger checked and they are fine, so nothing there. Apple tech keeps trying to send me a new computer.

This tech decided to give me that apple capture .DMG to send to engineering.

They emailed me a file called "Capture_Data_9.1.dmg" and it generated a file called "ACCD_(your computer name here)_1.dmg"

They said it would take a few days but that the same operator would call me back.

Of course, the last operator said my computer was tagged for replacement if I had battery issues, but this one said they have had NO reports of any issues with Lion and Battery life, so Apple is obviously playing the corporate shuffle and not being particularly honest with their techs.

    Best Excerpt from the call:

Statement: "Well we can go into activity monitor to check if anything is using a lot of the CPU."

My Response: "I've gone into unix and used the top command to check CPU usage and there is nothing significant other than the top command itself."

So, I can confirm it for myself. doing these following steps improved my battery to what it was on SL. Or almost anyway.

    1. Turn on your MBP. Let it boot to your desktop.

    2. On the menu bar at the top right corner of the desktop, click on your name/username that you set up.

    3. Then click on "Login Window..."

    4. You should get an animation of the desktop flipping over like a box to the login screen and then the prompt to sign in.

    5. Sign in!

Give it a minute or two for the battery meter to recalculate the time you have left. Mine went back up to the usual 8 hrs I got on SL. Right now I'm at school, with Chrome open, Ethernet (wifi too flaky at SFSU) and MS Word 2011 and my batery life is at 5:50 with 70% remaining on low/medium brightness.

You might have to do the steps I listed above each time you boot. Not sure, but that's what i've been doing.
