Q: Lion - Horrible MacBook Pro Battery Life

After upgrading to Lion, my MacBook Pro battery life has been severly affected. After 1.5 hours of light web browsing, my battery has decreased to 40% from 100% after charging all night.

Notes: Spotlight completed indexing the hard drive over night, and the laptop remained plugged in charging. The fans seem to be running normally, not at a higher rate. The backlight is at 50% brightness.

Thoughts?

According to Apple's site, it has to do with OpenGL-enabled apps...

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4044?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

While I love the concept of dual-GPUs, this will be my last machine with this type of setup until there is a hard-switch (metaphorically) that allows me to choose, specifically, which GPU I want to run and for how long. The problem I have with the setup Apple has decided on is it automatically and manually gives preference to the discrete card despite any other preference I might have (e.g. battery life vs. performance).

If you stop shouting in Caps someone might listen. You have choices. You can go to any other brand Computer. Unfortunately you can only go to 3 different OS brands, 2 'User Friendly' ones. You don't like Apple, so you are down to one, and I believe you know what it is. There is no 'solution' yet. You can wait longer if you think one is coming or else jump ship now. It won't effect anybody else.

Well, I'm listening to him.  Just because he wants to stay with Apple doesn't mean he suddenly has to overlook inaccurate advertising, poor performance, and hardware malfunctioning. As I've stated several times Pete, Apple has acknowledged to me that they know this is an issue and they are working to resolve it. But it's been a long while and people are frustrated.

Thanks for kindly understanding and respecting the adults who are voicing their concerns here.

I do not recall answering you. I was answering a poster who obviously can't understand why his posts are being removed and yet persists with hot headed posts. I have no issues with battery life, just an issue with rude people.

    Cheers

My post also got deleted. I just wanted to share my oppinion why I don't think this will get a clear fix in that post i refereced news about a future not-yet-public release of osx which obviously isn't allowed here.

Other than that I can't report any changes on my machine since 10.7.0.

Has anyone noticed whether there are different observations on SSD machines?

Yes that is correct. You agreed to the Terms Of Use here when you joined and what you commented on was absolutely against what you read and agreed to.

I am glad Apple acknowledged it to you, perhaps they did so in writing? and perhaps you could share?

"I have given up trying to have any more respect for the Apple Customer Service sense!  Where are they when we need them? It's an expensive affair and Apple seems to have a deaf ear about this whole Battery issue!"

Done with the rant! now for the serious talk -

    1. tried running bootcamp Windows 7 with 50% brightness, no audio/video, normal MS Word and MS Excel work - battery lasted for 2 hrs 20 mins.

    2. on the Mac side, same 50% brightness, no audio/video, no MS Word and MS Excel, web browsing with Safari only on Wikipedia, Gmail and Yahoo Mail - battery fully empty in 1 hr 58 mins.

Now I can say for sure that I do not get what Apple advertises on their website - 7 hrs battery life (Wireless web testing routine).

Now back again on 'Rant' mode -

Having said that, I bought the MBP in February 2012 from Apple UK and it has been hardly 4 months now. Is my purchase covered under Sale of Goods Act 1979 (as amended) which states that goods should be as described, of a satisfactory quality and fit for the purpose. See Section 14(2)B regarding fitness

Section 48A3). - 6 months to be able to return an item for replacement, repair or refund (despite what Apple says about the 14 days in Section7.1 in Sales and Refund policy) - entitled to a refund if you do not repair or replace the goods within a reasonable time and "without causing significant inconvenience".

Will I get a refund on the grounds of Apple's laziness (inability) to bring out a functional fix to this issue? I travel long distances frequently and hence a good battery life is essential. I am an Apple loyalist but that is interfering with my job here. Its an expensive affair as I had specced the MBP up.

I am a novice in such issues - any guidance would be respectfully listened to!

    Thanks in advance,

    Venki

I don't see anything wrong with someone venting their frustrations on here or anywhere.

Granted, there are Terms and Conditions of being a member on here that may prohibit such activity--that is what unofficial Apple-focused forums are for (i.e. MacForums, MacRumors, etc.)

That said, I still don't have a problem with people voicing their opinions on here. I do, however, have a problem with silencing them. While it may be the forum owner's right and priviledge to modify or delete posts that violate the Terms of Service, silencing that opposing voice only serves to undermine any credibility in exercising those rights or priviledges.

As for all Level 2's and above (Veterans): If you haven't something nice to say, say nothing. Be the example you are wishing to set rather than pillorying people for voicing their opinions. This board is no more yours than it is theirs! Nothing is forcing you to respond to criticism or opinions you don't agree with--in short, grow up.

As for all Level 1's and Newbies: You are not going to get any direct action from Apple on here aside from a message deletion that violates the terms of service. You should contact AppleCare via ExpressLane for repairs, advice, and resolution. Otherwise, you can send feedback directly to Apple via the Feedback section of their site.

I encourage healthy debate and discourse on all matters pertaining to Apple but I find a lot of the comments (mostly on behalf of the board Vets) at-times worse than any comments they appear to be arguing against.

John, thanks for this post. I couldn't have expressed it in such a precise way.

I want to add something which I think is often unconsidered or under-estimated. Besides of discussing technical solutions and workaorunds, I find it equally important to talk about strategies how to deal with issues if there is no direct solution or workaround like in this case. This requires to take a look beyond the edge of the plate which seems not to be tolerated by some people.

To be specific, for this issue I don't see a good chance for relief and this raises the question how to deal with it. Return the new MacBook again and again? Get one from the refurbished store and run SL? Wait for ML? etc. I personally think that this is what a community discussion is for. In the past years I have made some good experiences here but recently (since Lion?) things got a bit tougher.

    Pete,

I'm not sure why you feel you need to police, control and moderate people's emotions here—most others here are  mature enough to handle the frustation without having to comment. It really just makes for more sifting to the facts for the rest of us, okay?

What are you on about? There are Terms of Use we all agree to when we join here. You did read them didn't you? For those full of speculation or ignoring the rules then there are consequences for breaking these Terms. No grey areas. I'm not policing anything. I also wonder how you know of those 'mature' (invisable?) others who don't comment here????

Go back and read the Terms.

    Pete
